I was at the Pick n Pull in Fairfield, Ca on Friday May 17th. There was a 89 Dodge shortbed truck with a 4 speed overdrive transmission. It looked like it was all there, no one had taken any parts off of it. It had a V8 in it. I was thinking if a guy wanted to switch their truck to a 4 speed, this would be perfect. I just hate to see parts like these go to the crusher.

I could use the Z bar and the little bracket/ball stud that it pivots on that bolts to the bell ..

I'd be grabbing that for myself before any second thoughts.

The small block, 833od set up is rare to begin with (specific bellhousing) and is getting harder and harder to find.

An 833od is worth quite a bit to the person who can't justify spending up to five grand and a lot of headache to put a 5 speed overdrive in an old Mopar.

And, there's nothing wrong with the gear spreads either: I'm running one right now and it's fun as hell to drive.

I run 1 in myt shorty also. Wouldnt think of changing it. I think the people who knock them have never tried 1 behind a quick reving small block..

I'd go back grab it flywheel back, and all the clutch linkage (and pedals even)...I'd be interested in the bell and maybe flywheel....I've got an iron case A833OD in my duster behind a slant 6, and the slanty is feeling soooo sloooow ever since I bought my '11 charger R/T...

it has about 1/4 the HP of my charger and only gets 1mpg better than the charger in my typical commute...

If I am not mistaking, an '89 would have a 535 trans in it, not an 833OD. I think the last 833 was in '85.

In this case, you could still grab it, but it's going to have a pretty low first gear. it's not even remotly close to the more popular 833 trans, but if you gotta have a stick and its all there, go for it. Also if its a 360, it most likely will have the larger flywheel that needs the corresponding bellhousing to go with it--and will be balanced for a LA 360.

The bellhousing will have the right sized hole in it, but will not have the 833 pattern on it--just so you know for future reference. Supposidly someone said that some of the early bellhousings did have both patterns (435/535 and 833 trans) but I don't even think I have ever seen a pic of one on here.

Just an FYI...

Outcast Dodge guy.

I couldn't remember the exact year, but I was thinking it was before 89........but..............maybe someone put it in there?

I liked the it in my 81 swb.............drove it for 10 years..........couldn't tell you how many miles that trans had on before I starting using it in 2000.

The wide ratios look great on paper but the rpm swings are huge, unlike an 833.

Ever skip gears in a 5 spd. It'll kinda be like that. 1,3,5.

I did not get a real good look it the transmission, but it looked just like any other 833 I've had.

I suspect that it could have been the original transmission. They used the 833OD up to at least 87 or 88. It was a very uncommon option, but I've seen them.

If that truck is like the one I took apart several years ago, it will have a hydraulic clutch. The bellhousing will be a multi-pattern so other transmissions will bolt up to it. It will also have a 143 tooth flywheel.

It is certainly an unusual truck. To bad it's on the opposite side of the country!

Learn some thing every day.....I didn't realize that they went up in years as far as that. Cool.

Does anybody have a picture of this bellhousing your talking about?

it's not that bad, spread is similar to a 700R4....just have to build an engine with a wide plateau for a torque curve

ratios in the A833OD are 3.09/1.67/1/.73
700R4 are 3.06/1.63/1/.7

so if you shift at say, 6000 RPM with an A833OD, the 1-2 drops to 3240 RPM, the 2-3 drops to 3590 RPM....if you build a mild motor aiming for a torque peak in the 3500-4000 RPM range, with a little wider LSA to carry more torque up higher, shooting for a HP peak in the 5500-6000RPM range, it should be a very satisfying combo...

Not sure if the hydraulic setup is much good but took it any way.
Patrick is right, I built the 72 Satellite around best gearing / tire size vs cam (bullet regrind) and compression. With 225-70-14 3.23 gears and a holley 600DP on a 360 magnum i get 21-22 mpg on the highway with very little tuning done yet.

this is what i wanted the backup OD833 for. It is a porky 3912 lbs and I feel with a carb change and tuning looking for 25+ mpg on highway yet still able to really light them up when I want to.

I see posts where people are knocking this tranny as being weak, poor gearing ect. My shorty was factory equiped with 1. I changed the /6 for my warmed up 340 and have nerver regretted it. My power is good, you dont even notice the gear spread and the fuel mileage is great. Id do it again..
