I've been researching full length headers for my 99 dakota 318 4x4.

Just got an email back from John over at Southeast Performance. He says that there really is no full length header options for the 4x4's and shorty is my only option. Is this true? What are my options at this point for mids or shortys?

my 1st question would be.....why do you want to install longtube headers or any header for that matter on a 318...???

Im doing it to add another brand sticker on my truck.....

But seriously why else does anyone put headers on anything. Im not turning this into a project truck as the engine it has and the rest of the truck are in good shape. Dont have money for a larger engine swap, and at the same time i really love my 318 compared to my last dakota with a 3.9.

Why not use 92' model only Mag manifolds & upgrade the Y-pipe

My point is why put up with the headaches and expense of headers for basically no performance value on a stock engine

because a Magnum 318 is NOT an LA 318.

my truck came to me with a lowly 318. a performance intake, a new camshaft, some cheap generic headers, and a reprogram of the computer, and my 4,000 lb truck was running traction limited mid 14s (2.2 60' times, clicking through the traps at 95-97mph).

What did the 383 4bbl road runner do in the 1/4 mile when new?



for headers, look at spintech. they offer mid-length that drop right in with ZERO effort on the 2wd trucks (I think it would work on the 4x4, but I don't know where the torsion bars are on them)

Spin tech also offers long tube, but again, not sure on actual fitment on a 4x4

That is the point. You have a fairly heavy mid size truck with a 318 that has mild mod work that is in the same time bracket as a big block roadrunner. Not to dog the older la motors but the newer magnum engines do make more power while keeping reliability.

not sure if the older dak 89ish full legnth headers will work on your truck.. but maybe you can Try hooker headers for the early dak..

Just my opinion of course, but I don't think the performance gain of longtube headers would be worth the effort in the OP's 4x4 case....hey some folks just want'em.

Do some research on the test comparisons of headers to cast manifolds that have been dyno proven .... woke me up

I put full length headers on my 89 Dakota 2 wheel drive. I ended up putting a fuel cell in because the exhaust was so close to the tank.

Long tube headers fatten up the torque curve below the torque peak. It has to do with tuning, not backpressure.
4-2-1 headers take up less room and help the bottom end even more. They're sometimes called "Tri-Y".
