I have a 1985 D-150 with an 8 1/4 open axle, big bolt pattern, and a 1981 D-150 parts truck with a 9 1/4 sure-grip, small bolt pattern, I would like to swap the 9 1/4 into the '85, but retain the large bolt pattern, are the 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 axle shafts interchangeable?, if not, what do I need to do to my early 9 1/4 to get the big bolt pattern so I can re-use my aftermarket big bolt pattern wheels to work?

The axles will not interchange. to get the 9 1/4 rear with the 5x5.5 bolt pattern go to the salvage yard and find 4x4 dodge 86-93 with the 9 1/4 and pull the axles out and.

The drums from the 8 1/4 should work as long as they are the same size drum brakes if not chance the whole drum assembly out. drive shaft might not work?

Hope this helps.

Drums are the same, so no problem there, 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 are the same dimension for drive-shaft length, so that is not an issue, I just needed to know if the axle shafts would swap or am I looking for different axles or bolt pattern adapters/spacer, which I really didnt want to use, but considering what I will do with this truck, may not be an issue. I don't tow anything heavier than a 14' aluminum v-bottom much more than 10-15 miles 3-4 times a year, primary use of this truck is just gravel road travel once in a while. Aluminum bolt pattern adapters may be an acceptable issue just to get the sure-grip and greater strength of my 9 1/4? /although I have never been real comfortable using them in the past, I have never had an issue with them either. I'm just trying to get the better gear and sure-grip into this truck as easily and cheaply as possible.

Only axle from 9 1/4 will work.

have the 5X4.5 9 1/4 axles redrilled to the 5x5.5 pattern.. You will need a shorter driveshaft if you use your 9 1/4.

on a 9 1/4 with SBP axles you CAN NOT just swap axle from another 9 1/4 that has the LBP axles.

they changed the c-clip/carrier in 85 when going to the LBP axles.

if you swap the carrier and axles then you are good to go.

like said, just find a 4x4 85-93 with the LBP axles and sg carrier.

The Large bolt pattern was brought back in 80 for the 4wds and in 85 the 2wds were changed over aswell. So why can't he use an early 4x4 axle? Also why's it have to be 4wd when 85 up were all 5x5.5" bp

Thanks for the info everyone, Isnt't the 8 1/4 and the 9 1/4 the same length from axle shaft centerline to u-joint centerline, thereby able to use the same driveshaft assuming the u-joint size is the same? I may just have to check into having the 9 1/4 axles redrilled, I never even though of that, is their enough "meat" to do that safely?

Yes to both questions. Axles were $221 ea from Chrysler when I was doing this.

Shortly after my swap meet 9.25 sure grip axle swap I broke the spider gears and took an axle with it.

Thanks for the info everyone! I'm either going to go with the billet spacers or just drill out my shafts for the larger bolt pattern I think, If it was just factory wheels, I'd just carry 2 spares, but since the truck has nice looking AR aluminum wheels on it, I'd like to keep them and keep the bolt pattern the same, I do need a sure-grip for sure in Iowa with our crappy winters!!!! Anybody want to trade a lbp sure grip with 3.23 or 3.55 gears for a sbp sure grip with 3.21 gears?

See the two 11.69"? One is the 8 1/4, the other is the 9 1/4.

I know, I've done the 8.25 to 9.25 swap before. Larry seems to be indicating the driveshaft needs modification with the swap, then he posts a link to the chart that says no it doesn't. That's what I'm asking him about. It could be I'm missing something?

I should of said "may" need to swap the driveshaft. I was thinking 8.75 instead of the 8 1/4 even tho I saw the 8 1/4 in print. For some reason my brain wasnt functioning right and I was thinking back when I swapped my 8 1/4 out for the 8.75 in my shorty . I posted the chart to clear up the subject . . Sorry for the confusion .
