Is 0-60 in 4 seconds or low 4 seconds possible with a warmed up 73 charger 400 engine?

1973 Dodge Charger SE 400 automatic transmission. Curb weight: 3800 lbs. All stock so far. Goal: Reliable everday driveable warmed up 400 as close to 400hp as possible, then a 470 stroker if need be. Don't protect a feminist when the collapse comes!

Highly unlikely. It would take traction, gears, and power, more power than a "warmed up" 73 400

What do you think could be a realistic 0-60 time for a car like that?

Right around 6 seconds would be doing pretty good for what it is. Some combos of that description would have trouble breaking 7 seconds. Low 4s is unbelievably quick!!! Others would know better than I but I bet low 4 would equate to about 1.7 60-foot

Those 2.76's are hurting the most. If you want it quicker off the line, use 3.91 or 4.10's.

But it won't be nice to drive on the highway anymore, unless you add an overdrive.

I knew the 4s were pushing it. I would have thought the 5s was possible. Anything that could be done about traction like suspension, transmission?

I just noticed the additional info on your car I agree, the 2.76 gears are a MAJOR handicap to any quick acceleration. I seriously doubt you would break the 7 second mark......sorry.

3.91 would make a HUGE difference, but gear swaps are always a trade off/compromise

...do you HAVE traction problems now? If so, that's impressive with 2.76 gears?

...do you have sure-grip?

what time do you think would be possible with 3.91?

I should say that I just bought the car but don't have with me yet. I think it's the stock rear for the 73 charger se 400

I'm not %100 sure, but with a stock 400 in a heavy 73 Charger with 3.91's, maybe 5.5 or 6 seconds? You'd need decent traction, and probably a higher stall torque converter to get there.

Your goal is doable though I think. Especially if you go the 470 or even a 505 route since it really doesn't cost much more.

Speed cost money, how fast you wanna go?

Seriously? Drove From Memphis to San Diego with 4.10 gears and no overdrive.

NO PROBLEMS.

But it wasn't my momma's car I was driving either.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I'm talking warmed up to about 400 hp.

I'm not saying you can't, and I guess it doesn't bother some people. I have a '80 Mirada with 3.91's and long trips at 3500+ rpm and the loud exhaust get on my nerves after a while. I never had a problem but I guess I worry too much with the engine buzzing for hours like that.

I eventually want to get to the 470 stroker but its too much money for now. So I'm getting there in stages by first warming it up with some heads, cam, intake exhaust etc.

Anyone knows of an acceleration calculator that takes gears into account?

According to Wallace my Duster's 0-60 is 3.71 (using my best pass.) I have never calculated nor even thought about my 0-60 time before, lol!

I have been using this one but obviously there are a lot more variables.

How warmed up a 400? The 400 in my '71 Charger is stroked to 500", I think it may be around 4sec 0-60

I think you're in the high fives with a warmed 400. Asking a lot to be in the 4s without some serious heat.
