Drag Week 2011: The Experience

Drag Week 2012: The Preparation

Drag Week 2012: The Experience

I started the new story on Saturday morning, March the 16th, right after the crazy registration period that saw 250 Drag Week entries filled in a mere 8 hours. I was about 45 minutes into my opening post when my wife came home from work...and promptly went completely ballistic!! Yelling about how I don't make her important, and how mad she is that I've been spending so much on the cars lately. Then, to emphasize her point she started to reach for the freshly opened car part boxes dominating the kitchen table, but with what little self control she had left she turned her anger to a brand new box of saltines from the counter. Hurling them to the floor, she bagan kicking and stomping the poor box into oblivion as she related all the reasons why I am a terrible husband. As she ended her tirade, she stared at me, lowered her voice, and said, "I bet you're on Moparts right now bragging about how you got entered to Drag Week again! You are already starting a new story aren't you!!"
"Uh, no..no honey I was simply reading BangShift", I replied as I frantically moused over the little red X in the corner...click, 45 minutes of typing wasted, but at least I was in better shape than that poor box of saltines!

Might I suggest MS Word, the Save button and then copy and paste to Moparts?

Have the daughter take them to her work at Kroger and get a replacemnt box of saltines. She went and had a blast and is in your corner.

Glad to see the beginning of your 2013 adventure. As I told you at MATS these are some of my favorite reads on Moparts.

Alas, to put the "saltines story" in proper context I must go back cronologically and bring everything forward from DragWeek 2012. When I left off, both cars drove themselves onto the trailer. They returned to Phoenix and were unceremoniously pushed off into the drive and carport without making a peep. They sat while I spent October, and the better part of November crafting my tale, clacking away at the keyboard night after night.
Rachael and I did manage to talk my wife into approving the purchase of "some aluminum heads" for the Belvedere, since it had a blown head gasket for the third time, and I didn't know the history of the 906's on it. I ended up purchasing a set of NIB CNC Stealths from another member on Moparts, saving a couple hundred, and immediately thinking, "Those are too good for the lowly 440, I'm gonna save these and do a stroker". Yep, see how easily we are led astray?

It was within this time frame that Phoenix had their bi-annual "Cruise on Central". As I've commented before, in the 4 years since I decided to convert the Valiant from a drag only car to street use, I've broke it several times, and never once driven it on an Arizona public street, despite completing 2 Drag Weeks, so I really wanted to do this. The day of the event, I pulled the headers off and replaced the blown header gaskets, charged the batteries, and screwed in new plugs, turned it over, and it stopped. tried it again, same thing. I remembered one of the back 2 plugs on the driver's side, looked a little rusty, so I pulled them out and spun it over, sure enough, it spun easily, and then shot water all over the inner fender! Foiled again! This is a standard bore X block, cometics, and 45 year old production heads that had the snot ported out of them in the 90's, and abused ever since...I think I know what the weak link in that chain is.

"The Shop"! Good News, you buy a cheap house, you have money left over to spend on lots of cool cars, and cool car parts! Bad News, you have no decent place to work on said cars, or store said car parts!!

Once I realized the Valiant was a dead player, my attention turned back to the Belvedere, but, it was December, and I was helping my son pursue his dream mopar car.
He's had a pair of late 80's 2 wheel drive RamChargers, but as his 25th birthday approached, his attention has turned to a car. Kid has strange tastes but I tried to not influence him too much as he kept leaving up Ebay and Craigslist adds of stuff he was interested in: 76-79 F Bodies, 67-74 C-bodies, 75 up B-bodies, 73 up Darts, M and J Bodies, good grief!!
Finally, we sealed the deal on a 76 Fury Sport in So-Cal. Red, 400, straight, runs and drives decent, for 2600$. We were happy with it, but my wife, watching another old Mopar unloaded at the house, not so much!

Boone, Mom and Dad arrived in Phoenix, December 23rd, bringing with them the Dana 60 I had paid Dale to rebuild for the Belvedere, only problem was he hadn't picked up the wheel seals yet, so the backing plates weren't on it, nor were the brakes done. They also brought the 727 I had paid Dad to re-build for the Belvedere, only problem was he lost the TF-3 equipped valve body and deep pan when he had sold the shop and moved out, so it was without those items, but he promised to look through the 4 trailers and 3 garages full of stuff they'd evacuated, it had to be there somewhere! They also brought with them the 3/8 fuel pick-up, 3/8 fuel line, and Global West sub-frame connectors that Dale was supposed to install on the Belvedere before Drag Week 2012...now THAT ball is firmly in my court!
Other than removing the intake and carb, driver's side head and exhaust, and looking at the very blown 8519 fel-pro head gasket, I hadn't done much to the Belvedere, and with family in town, for the next 2 weeks, it was doubtful much more would get done until after the New Year.

my first car was a 76 sport fury and I loved that car. Wish I had never hit a tractor trailer, guard rails and a few trees with that car

I did notice a month ago that my guard rails I paid for are still there
