I just noticed i have a 17 inch spare tire on my 2003 Ram 4x4 1500 but i have the 20 inch upgraded rim package. So does it do harm to the drivetrain to run the 17 spare if i need to in an emergency??

Thanks
Stu

Most of the time no. The factory commonly used a smaller rim and a tire that was still the same OD as the 4 on the road so it would be safe to use. If you have a different OD spare vs the tires OD on the truck the LS rear diff could get a bad work out.

That's what i was thinking as i remember years ago being told never run a different size of height tires even for a short distance on the rear axle.

Is that true for the fronts as well?? I know with hand locking hubs you could do that but what about these on the automatic locking hubs??

As long as you never put it in 4WD, it shouldn't cause the front diff any problem as the auto hubs would be disengaged in 2WD. If you have an open rear diff it would sure give the spider gears some exercise but for a short distance at reduced speeds likely be OK. The clutches in a suregrip rear diff would be up in smoke in pretty short order IMHO.

I replaced the stock factory locking differntal with an Aurburn locking unit a few years ago. So i guess if i had to put on the spare it would only be on the front that i could do it, correct??

Not if the outer diameter is close to the bigger rims, then you're okay.
