I'm thinking about swapping out my 3.55 gears in the front and rear of my '96 Ram 2500 4x4 Dana 60s to 4.10. The motor is a stock 5.9 Magnum with a 46RH transmission. Tire size is 285/75/R16 load range E. The rear has a limited slip unit in it. Has anyone done this swap? If so, what has been you experiences? Would my gas mileage be better or worse with this swap to 4.10s? Any other pros and cons I should think about before undertaking this swap?

Too bad you weren't closer, I've got a set of 4.10 diffs I have to get rid of, all set to go. Save you hours of work and tons of $$$$.
If you pull loads all the time your mileage will go up, if you run around empty your mileage will go down I reckon.

Sheldon has you on the right track here.

If you can get your hands on a 4.10 rear-end from the wreckers you can just slip it under there and drive around in 2wd for a few weeks and see if you like it.

The 4.10's in my 360 Off-Road with 285/75-17's are standard issue and I really like them. Here are the pros:

*Good fuel mileage if you keep the speed at 60mph or less.

*Off-line acceleration is a bit better.

*You can tow heavy in third gear, and I have pulled an open car hauler with a Challenger on it in 4th no problem.

*Less down-shifting on the freeway for hills.

Cons:

*Expensive to do on a 4wd.

*Setting up new gears is tricky and never seems to be as perfect as the factory.

*If you like to drive above 60mph your fuel mileage will start to get worse. The "kegger" manifold really likes 1600rpm and when you start to go over that mark the mileage goes down (with mine anyway).

The reason I'm asking is that I have a line on completely setup front and rear Dana 60s with 4.10s and both with disc brakes, so its from a later model Ram 2500 4x4.

This is just an opinion ...worth exactly what it cost ya.

Do it.

Running the 285s your functional gear ratio now is in the low 3.00s, you will be regaining some of the mechanical advantage, in same/same use I would expect mileage to go up, and of course will pull out better from a stop.
That is unless all your driving is 70 mph interstate.

All based on past experience with carbed trucks, 4 wd, 3.55/4.10.

Don't forget correcting the speedo ...

It takes gasoline to interest me.

The discs are a nice upgrade by themselves. If it doesn't work out you can go to a taller tire. I agree on the 70MPH cutoff thing too.
I didn't do the math but the speedo might be close with the 285's as well.

Folks, thanks for the feedback. Now I just have to figure out if I want to spend the money and undertake the swap. Just wish I had more time...
