I'm not sure about the toilet cleaner, wouldn't that possibly be too corrosive?

You don't leave them in there for a long time , or over night. soak for a few minutes , scrub with a plastic brush and rinse in water. For the stuff you get to use at home might take a little more effort?

But the white vinegar mentioned after I posted sounds like a good alternative , it's not sure acidic , I'll have to give it a try .

Has anyone used RPM (Rust Prevention Magic) to protect the connectors after cleaning them?

Use electric dielectric grease , if the factory used that on them way back then you wouldn't see half the oxidation issues , some car makers use it now .

I thought someone just dipped them in muriatic acid to instantly clean them up??? Never tried it myself, but maybe look into it?

That's swimming pool acid right? maybe taking the terminals/pigtails out of the bulkhead & let them dangle in a small lid of it & see how it does

Today I used some of the "DeOxit" on the female terminals and blew it out with compressed air. The male spades were cleaned as well. I used a file to scrape even though there was no corrosion, only some tarnished copper.
I expected there to be more gunk since the car is 43 years old. I did have the harness out in 2002 when I painted the car and engine bay. maybe I cleaned them then? Heck... that was 11 years ago!

How much of that dielectric are you supposed to use? Just a dab to coat the contacts?
I haven't put the connectors back together yet.

Some info on the dielectric grease:

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-dielectric-grease.htm

You can apply generously to the "pockets" in the connectors, the grease is not conductive, and is designed to prevent oxygen, and moister, from corroding or tarnishing the contacts.

However I think the author of the page may not be a "car" guy:

Quote:

Dielectric grease is widely used as a sealant for spark plugs in gasoline or diesel engines, as well as on the gaskets of multi-pin connectors in the electrical systems of vehicles and boats.

I used this when I reassembled after cleaning. Worked awesome and a little less mess than the dielectric grease. Time will tell if it is as good
