I had planned to put a 440 4spd in my Clubcab Powerwagon and I have a built 383 I had planned for my 80 D100. I purchased a aftermarket bellhousing and a Flywheel from a member. Can I use the flywheel on the 383 without any mods?

Weren't all Bigblocks that were mated to a 4spd? I've always heard 400/4spd were forged crank motors

383/400/440 cast crank use a 100 gram weight on the TC for external balance.IIRC

I used a 400 TC on my 440 cast crank no problems.

Aren't all 383s Forged cranks? I've never heard of a cast crank 383. My 440 I had planned to use is a steel crank. Using a NP435

I just know the 440 crank is cast. but 383/400/440 are external balance and can all use the 100gram weighted TC.

I aksed if I needed to keep the TC that was on the cast crank 440 with the replacment trans from a 400.

John Kunkle posted I was good to use the TC from the 400 with the big weight. and that 383/400/440 cast cranks share that 100 gram weight.IIRC

I used the 400 TC that came in the used replacment 727.

works fine

Such dangerous words, "I have heard".

There were 383s built with cast cranks, I would tend to put them in 1971. One can tell how an engine was built by looking at the engine ID pad. If there is a letter "E" stamped onto the pad the engine was built with a cast crank. Of course this doesn't include 1969 model year engines that have their engine code starting with "E383" or E440", because there the E is for 1969. But if your 383 has G383R____ E
on the engine ID pad it's a 71 model year engine that came with a cast crank.

Cast crank 383s, 400s and 440s all used the same external balance weight amount.

R.
