hi guys, i installed new flame thrower coil on newly rebuilt eng. and ran car for first time breaking in cam 20-30 min. car ran fine and quit. oil leaking out of new ign coil made wire greasy and fell off. why would a new coil leak ? aftermarket 45000 volts flame thrower. i had same issue a few years back on a 440 6 pk motor and never did figure it out. do i need the inline resistor on the negative side ? i had it in when this happened this weekend. thanks

Actually the oil filled aftermarket coils don't hold up laying sideways...You need the epoxy filled versions when mounting horizontal...

tighten up the screw down in the tower & that should stop the leak. Sometimes people get lazy/indifferent/overwhelmed on a fast moving assembly line

Some coils are not designed to be mounted horizontally and will therefore leak if not mounted upright. If you still have the packaging take a look at the fine print and I would guess it says something about that. What I got was a black MSD Blaster 2 and peeled the label off it before mounting it in the stock position. Can't recall now if it's oil-filled but MSD said it could be mounted either way. Other than the missing date code and Mopar symbol it looks stock... and it's not leaking.

Take it back...
The round type, traditional coils use oil for cooling and it should not leak... Yes, it is best to mount vertically if possible for equal distribution of the internal oil..

Just my $0.02..

Did you run it without the ballast resistor specified by the coil manufacturer and cook the coil and now it's leaking?

All the stock 383 and 440 as well as the 440 6 pak motors and 426 Street Hemi had the coils mounted sideways

Because it's cheap chinese junk , call whomever you bought it from and get another one. I have a flamethrower from back when they were USA made , a few years later i bought one and it was made in china , I sent it back without even opening the package and bought an MSD Epoxy filled coil , it was made in USA , but I think now MSD is now outsourcing also ...

Good luck...

The Flamethrower I bought back in '99 , USA made , I mounted horizontal and it never leaked a drop. It's been sitting in a box in my basement since 2000, I'm sure laying on it's side , I'll have to see if it's leaking ...

On the same vein, can one mount the Accel Super Coil
horizontally? (the big yellow finned one) I've looked at the web site, but no info....thanks

I'm sure it's more a case of poor quality craftsmanship than anything...I went through the ordeal a few years ago when I was using the horizontal mounting bracket and had leaking pig...Then started checking into it...Why would a manufacturer even give a disclaimer on how the coil is mounted ??? Obviously they know there's a problem with the design... Then acted like I should have known all along about it...

I had one in '77, vertical was what it said to do! I didn't run 2 resisters and it burned out my '77 model Direct Connection chrome box.

Yes, vertical on the Accel super coil, got a reply back from them....

"Your request (#9830) has been deemed solved.
Scott, Mar 20 09:29 (EDT):
Hello,

We recommend installing and mounting the 140001 coil vertically. Mounting this coil in any other position could cause a "dry spot" on the coil windings that prevents proper cooling of the coil.

Please let us know if you need additional help.

Thank you,
-Scott"
