please help... i have a 318 74 auto column shift charger. shift rod from steering column wont reach the z-bar looking cross bar. column shift 74,s are weird. the bracket on frame rail points downward. the bracket on trans bolts into side of case and points downward. the cross bar z-bar looking thing goes under torsion bar and exhaust. it can only go that way. it even shows it that way in shop manual. you cant flip it upward like a console shift and have it above torsion bar. that being said. the rod from column wont reach the cross bar now. any ideas ?

Have you got the Zbar swapped end for end maybe?

I have never seen a z bar(torque rod)under the torsion bar on any mopar.

did you swap from 727 to 904 or 904 to 727 maybe?

maybe turn the rod around.

yes its weird on 74 column auto the z-bar goes under the torsion bar. picture in shop manual. cant swap it around backwards. the adjustable end goes by frame rail for the steering column shift rod to go into it. the other end by trans just snaps into rubber bushings. the only thing i could think is i had k-frame out and put in new poly frame bushings and thought frame looked about 1 inch lower than before. thus making frame lower, body higher with steering column and making rod shorter.just a theory.

glad you fixed it.

I just put a SB 4-v 3-piece kickdown linkage on my 85 truck.

I had to add 2-3 inches to the middle down rod to get it to work and adjust.

I dont know why?? it came from a SB 4-v 727 car.

like you I just welded in a piece and now it adjusted and works great.

must have shrunk in transit.
