Where to find a heater core?

I need a new heater core for the Imperial. It's a twin core unit similar to this:  The radiator shop I use is a great place that has been around since the 40s. They usually find anything I need. This time around they've drawn a blank. There are apparently no 1972 Imperial heater cores to be had. They tried ordering similar size cores that could be modified to fit my car but there are none available in the correct width. The cores measure 8-3/4 x 6-3/8 x 1-1/2. Custom cores could be made but I'd be facing $400 or more. Do you guys have any idea where I could find heater cores?

This is not a hot rod. It is an Imperial luxo cruiser. It will have a working heater.
I planed on running up to 14,000 feet in a couple weeks. A heater would be nice.

The evaporator is set up the same way. This is a reheat system. Air blows across the evaporator then hits the heater core. That dehumidifies the air. Modern cars do this too, especially on defrost.
I would get half warm air and half cooled air. If I were to choke it down to a single core I would lose half my air flow.
Still, the problem lies in finding a 1-1/2" thick heater core that will fit in the box.

I might have a complet box from one of my 70 Imps.They all had good cores and were all Auto Temp cars.Let me know and Ill see if they are at the other garage.Rocky

How about 14,000 feet?
The idea was a run through Colorado. It's currently on hold pending the outcome of this issue.
For your planning purposes, Pikes Peak and Mt Evans will not be open til Memorial Day. Those are the only two places you can drive that high. Also, Trail Ridge Road (11,000 feet)may not be open until even later as the federal budget woes will not allow overtime to plow it open as quickly as in past years.

Feets do you have a pic of your actual core?Is your box out or still in the car?I cant remember if my factory parts books go to 72 .If they do I might be able to get a factory parts no.there was a place I got parts for my 57 that had tons of NOS stuff.they were cheap also.Rocky

I think I have a parts manual for 72. I'll have to dig around when I get home.

I have manuals from the 50s to the 70s.Biggest problem is they are mixed together.I probally have 10000 to 20000 pages.Never really used any of them past the mid 60s.Rocky

I found it in my manual. It's part number 3420787. Well, that's what it used to be. There's not telling how many changes have been made. Here's a catalog pic.

I picked up the heater core from the shop today. I'll take it home and do some measuring. If there is enough room the shop will rebuild it with a 2" core.
