We had a stock 440 in the challenger car had a 26"rad it cooled ok but in the very hot summer in trafic it would push antfreeze out a tad it idle very much
we put in a non stock 426 hemi and swaped out the stock rad for a 3row champion 26" had to get rid of the stock fan setup so its got 2 10" ele fans it has no problem cooling the hemi at all

Thanks, I did call Champion and Gary said he has installed many without issues. Has confidence that I will be very pleased if I choose Champion to cool my toy. Same setup as you 26" 3row with 2 electric fans for my 500hp+/- 440

Talk to Glen Ray radators. About the rad support see if a repo 26" support is offered like they have for B bodies. Replace the one you have and it wont look a chopped up.

My 408 is in the 550 hp range and has no over heating issues with a generic two core aluminum radiator, a viscous fan and a shroud. It seldom runs over 175 even in high 90* temps.

What size 2 row? Side tank or Top?

Bottom, it's hard to see, look over the strap to the left of the hook. It uses replacement hoses for a 73 dart.

Is it just me, maybe I'm off base. I understand there are allot of variables in producing horse power in materials, compression, forced air and so on, so every engine is going to very in heat produced. So rating a radiator to HP? How often are you producing 500 HP cruising around. If a 22 inch works don't fix it

Well said!
The question was posed because I went big block and needed to purchase a radiator. The recommendations poured in and left me . I felt a 22" should handle it fine but I didn't want to purchase one then find it was not quite enough. So I'm leaning toward a Champion 26" 3 row without cutting my rad support area as apposed to a 22".

If you go 26" cut it and use a shroud, it's no good blocked off.

Just came from a Mopar show and many running high HP big blocks with 22" Radiators without issues. My car is more for show and I dont want to cut the rad support unless absolutely necessary. I want extra cooling capacity for street driving, true but I dont want some over-sized $1000. monster rad if I dont need it. I"m still leaning toward a side tank 22" 3 row with electric fans.

I didn't have good luck cooling with electric fans, your results may be better though.

I don't know too many people who have taxed a cooling system as severely as I have.
My 65 has a 26" factory style radiator in a 22" opening. For several years there were a pair of turbochargers hanging inches away from the radiator. When spooled up the headers, turbine housings, and downpipes would glow red with the heat. Pack all of that on a 440 in a really tight engine compartment and you've got cooling nightmares. Doubly so in the Texas summer when I was running WOT in 100+ degree temps.

Once I dropped in the Mercedes cooling fan all my troubles went away.
Blowing the occasional head gasket certainly didn't help things but the car still didn't overheat until I'd pushed too much of the coolant overboard.

A proper 26" radiator will handle a lot of heat.

Nice to hear some real world first hand knowledge on Radiator cooling issues.
