I have a 408 stroker 68 Barracuda that is 10 to 1 compression and has a cam that is 248 - 258 at 50 and 540 lift mechanical, edelbrock heads. It is fed by a 780 holley Dp. I hobby race 1/8th mile with it. It runs 11.01-02 at 97 and I just can't squeeze the 10's out of it. What would the optimum timing be for this set up? I read other engines being from 32 to 38 total advance so that is a lot of variance, anyone dyno one similar to find out what the best degree is? Thanks

Most of the small block strokers are running low 30's I run mine at 32*
They apparently don't like a lot of timing. You said you run 1/8 mile then posted times in the 11's, I have to assume those are 1/4 times?

The sweet spot on my 360 was 32 - 34 depending on fuel. Most of the time it was set at 34. Performance dropped off notably if timing was different from this range.

I'm assuming it runs 7.01-02 @ 97mph

My car has almost the exact same setup, only my cam is a roller (248/254 duration, .576/.584 lift). Mine likes 34°. You are very close, probably making power fine, possibly the suspension or converter holding it back...speaking of, what do you have for suspension and converter? 60' times would help too.

For a frame of reference, my 67 Barracuda runs low 6.9's in the 1/8 in the heat of the summer. Current best in sig.

The efficiency of the head and the fuel used determines
what the timing should be... the better the head the
lower the timing will be but for most its in the 34* range

Yea I was thinking and typing (not good). The car averages 7.1 at 97 in the 1/8th. It has run 11.01 on the quarter.
It has 28-10.5 slicks, 4.56 gears, super stock springs, 904 SMR trans foot brake, and a 4300 stall converter. It has ported edelbrock heads on it. 60 ft times are 1.59. Thanks for the input I will check and run 32-34. I would like to get it to run in the high 6's consistently.

If you can knock another .05 off your 60 foot times you will be there.

When my 408 had cam and compression simular to yours it liked 36 the best. I found this on a chassis dyno. At 34 it was 2 hp down. Timing was very insensitive at the track as far as et. I now run 35 with a point more comp and bigger cam on pump premium. Indy heads.

...start looking at the chassis... get the
front end loose.. and watch your rear shock adjustments

put smaller jets in the carb. Keep going until the car loses MPH. Then go up two numbers.

Same thing with timing keep dailing it up til it slows down then go back two numbers.

I can't say this enough MPH is HP. ET is not. Get your MPH by tuning the engine. Then work on the suspension to get the best short times. If footbraking you can play with squirters and timing curves.

Yeah, I would work on the suspension. My car has the same size tire (Hoosier QTP street slick) and 4.10 gears with a 727 trans with a 8" converter (5000 stall). Even when I had stock springs (not super stock) the car would 60' between 1.49 and 1.53....Do you have 90/10 drag shocks on the front? If not, get some. Also, if you want to help the weight transfer, move the battery to the trunk (if you have not already done so). My other "trick" is to pull the front bumper and brackets off. It takes less than 3 minutes to remove, and only about 5 minutes to put back when you are done...just 4 bolts, 3 minutes of your time and it shaves 33 lbs off the nose of the car...that right there would probably get you that 6 second time slip. Good luck
