Ok so I picked up a rust free 96 ram1500 standard cab short box 318/46re for 600$. was told trany slips when warmed up. So I droped the pan it was real clean inside. I installed the "sure cure" kit in the valve body and adjusted the bands. I also replaced the the govenor presure/overdrive solinoids. I installed a cooler and removed the checkvalve and filled it with ATF+4. I have drove it about 75 miles now and really don't think the trany is "slipping" but I don't think the torque coverter is locking up. It has 3.55 gears and 265-70-16 tires and runs 2000rpm at 60 which seams kind of high was thinking it should be more like 1600. How can I check to make sure its a bad converter and not something else. I have a code reader but not a scanner.

Lock out the OD and accelerate through the gears, after the 2-3 upshift you should be able to feel the converter lockup with an accompanying drop in rpm on the tach.

I should know this, but what's the OD ratio? I calculate 2340 rpm at 60 in Third with converter locked.

R.

I think it's .69:1.

Yea I tried that and still no lockup. It dose go into overdrive just fine.

Dont be suprised if it needs a torque converter. The lock-up clutch is not very stout in them. I've replaced many of them. If you put a converter in it, do yourself a favor and pull the pump and inspect it for wear where the input shaft goes through the stator. A new converter bushing and seal is also a good idea. I would also replace the sealing rings on the input shaft with the updated interlocking style rings for better sealing. You can also drill the relief hole in the boost valve cover to about .070 for better apply pressure to the lock -up clutch. Its a small metal cover on the top side of the valve body held on with 3 T-25 screws with a tiny hole in it.

You could try replacing the lockup solenoid, it's on top of the valve body.

I drilled the hole as it is part of the "sure cure" kit. I am looking for a afordable scanner that will display the different real time outputs so I can see if the computer is telling the converter to lockup. If I can't find one I guess I'll take it to a trany shop and have them scan it.

I just went through this on mine. My transmission ended up needing a rebuild (not cheap, by the way), but I learned a couple things along the way. Since your fluid is clean, I suspect it's overheating and kicking into "limp mode" which very much feels like it's slipping. Seemingly, a very common cause for the transmission overheating is the check valve in the transmission line. The first thing I'd do is remove it, and replace it with HIGH PRESSURE 3/8" hose. The attached shows you where it is. I didn't get so elaborate when I removed mine; just cut the pre-made line where it comes out of the radiator and put the new hose in with some good clamps. If you research the subject you'll realize that just how common the problem is...

the check valve is a spring and a rubber ball all you have to do is run a drill bit in the end of the hose and you can get all of it out without replacing anything

Well I did remove the check valve and installed a plate cooler and bypassed the cooler in the radiator. I'm going to have to scan it as I have also replaced the overdrive/lockup solinoids and the pressure sensor.
