Hey all,
I tore apart a 318 Magnum the other day for a core and I noticed it has a 1 piece gasket. Its the 360-style rear main, I knew that they went to that.
Anyway the rear pan rail gasket on my '75 360 in the 3/4 ton is leaking pretty good. I was curious to know if a Magnum 1 piece gasket would work on this motor and is there any advantage to it.
It looked sturdier than the early gaskets and I know that the gasket in my high-mileage 318 (193) in the '95 Dak isnt leaking hardly any. Do they seal any better than the early multi-piece gaskets?

The Magnum pan gasket will work great on an LA 360. It will NOT work on any other LA engine. Jamie, there is a huge advantage to running the steel core 1p gasket. I've done it a few times, and haven't had a leak yet. I throw the old cork crappers in the burn pile. Still a good idea to dap a little rtv at each of the 4 main corners though for good measure, although probably not neccesary.

from an article on a 360 magnum in hot rod a couple of months ago...
it said that you have to match the gasket to the pan otherwise big leak from unsupported area..
that is a magnum gasket with magnum pan...la gasket with la pan....the combo will fit all 360 engines...
copied this from hot mag...
Oil Pan Interchange At the bottom end, the Magnum engines all use the LA-series 360 rear oil-pan relief. Any 360 oil pan will bolt to a Magnum. However, a non-Magnum pan cannot use the Magnum one-piece oil-pan gasket, as the early LA-series pans are notched at each side of the rear relief, while the Magnum is not. A non-Magnum pan will require the LA-series 360 oil-pan-gasket set.

I tried to use a magnum gasket twice on my 5.9 with a LA pan. Could not stop the oil spray out of the front at high RPM. I finally put the LA gasket back on the pan and never had that problem again. But hey, I have only been putting my engines together for 25 years. I may be missing something.
