HAd the same problem. Put a magnum gasket on an la pan, and it had a big gap at the edges in front.
would litteraly pour out of the front of the motor.
Ran fine on a test stand, but when we picked it up to move it, it tilted front first, and oil just ran out of it.

Had to rip it off and put an la gasket on.

from an article on a 360 magnum in hot rod a couple of months ago...

it said that you have to match the gasket to the pan otherwise big leak from unsupported area..

that is a magnum gasket with magnum pan...la gasket with la pan....the combo will fit all 360 engines...

copied this from hot mag...

Oil Pan Interchange
At the bottom end, the Magnum engines all use the LA-series 360 rear oil-pan relief. Any 360 oil pan will bolt to a Magnum. However, a non-Magnum pan cannot use the Magnum one-piece oil-pan gasket, as the early LA-series pans are notched at each side of the rear relief, while the Magnum is not. A non-Magnum pan will require the LA-series 360 oil-pan-gasket set.

I tried to use a magnum gasket twice on my 5.9 with a LA pan. Could not stop the oil spray out of the front at high RPM. I finally put the LA gasket back on the pan and never had that problem again. But hey, I have only been putting my engines together for 25 years. I may be missing something.

Since it sounds like I may be sitting on a time bomb... I'm curious. After re-reading this twice, Steve says the problem is at the rear, you say you had problems at the front too. Is this correct?

I noticed it most at the front, but yes the back had a gap as well.

The area where the curve starts where the two piece gasket overlaps, on an la pan is pulled away from the block more than the magnum pan.

I didn't bother trying to tilt the engine the other way since I knew I had to rip it out.

Now I did check it after putting the new gasket on.

If I had to do it again, I would cut the front and back off the magnum gasket and use the la gasket ends.

OK now I've got some insight. I'm thinking I may have an option here. I have the pan and pickup from the 318 Magnum that I tore down. I wonder if I can use it in the early trucks. It looks a little deeper but the shape is basically the same. I'd have to clean it out real good (flood motor, but still oily) but its very usable.

Another option that I was thinking was cutting the front end rail rubber gasket up and filling those gaps that way and with a bit of silicone for good measure. But it looks like the gasket is going to be $28-something at the parts store so it may wait until spring.

I put an LA pan on a magnum with the one piece gasket. I placed some sheet metal banding around the timing cover and snugged the pan down. Then I heated the corner gaps and re-formed them with a body hammer. Fits great now.

I also welded up the little hole where the repair was done.

the correct gasket is cheaper and less time consuming to install than all that work..

yes Flat, Mine was actually spraying out the front when you popped the throttle.

Yes, the mag pan will work in a truck---i have a 5.9 mag long block in my '85 truck---plenty of room for the pan.

As far as the gasket goes, i used a LA style gasket with a LA pan in my car and the mag gasket with the mag pan in the truck--its what works for me--others have had sucess either way.
