Sand off the rust and scuff any paint well. Be ready to prime IMMEDIATELY. Shoot on a coat of automotive etching primer. If you want to spend the time, lightly sand to get a smooth surface. You may have to shoot and sand again if you get carried away. Spray with the automotive paint of your choice. Enjoy! R.

I just used a HF abrasive blast gun #92857 $24.95 and bought 5 lbs of #98329 glass beads today & tried it out this evening & it cleans so fast I was totally impressed. I had a quantity of some unlabeled dark red fine abrasive which didn't come from HF which didn't work so I tried the glass beads on a spot on a junk rim as I was leery just to see if it'd work as I thought maybe the HF gun was for some special media & it sure did work like gangbusters. Waiting for a warm(er) day so I can finish blasting then etch/prime then paint with the recommendations in this thread  EDIT the glass beads were $7.99

How long did it take to do the rim??? And how much bead did you go through???

My rims are in my mini shop/garage & I was over at my buddys shop as he has a massive air compressor so I grabbed a junk rim & did a small spot just enough to see where I was at with this. It cut very fast so I THINK I'll easily have enough to do my 4 rims on the front side. I am going to spread a big tarp out to catch everything & recyle em if need be especially if I am very close to being finished to avoid another trip to HF. With my limited experience with blasting/painting I'm just happy that this went very well especially after the first media I used didn't do squat. Not sure what psi our compressor runs at but it is substantial & I'm sure that makes a difference. From what I've experienced so far these rims will be prepped in a matter of a few minutes
