It has been 7+ years since I last pulled my 727 out of the car, and I have forgotten if I had to support the rear of the engine or not as I unbolt the tranny.
Can someone confirm this for me? If so, where is a good place?

Thanks allot!!

Yes, absolutely support it. Either something under the oil pan, towards the back, or a strong board up between the fender ledges with some chain, etc. use rags, blocks etc to save paint/oil pan. Definitely support it.

Can I put a floor jack with a 2x4 piece of wood under the oil pan or will this damage the oil pan?

Thanks for your response.

You might be able to get away with that. I don't do that though. hydraulic floor jacks many times leak down especially if they are older. I always like doing something solid, even if it's a chunk of 4x4 stood up, or a pile of bricks, a concrete block stood up with something on top. You're not talking about more than a few hundred pounds at worst, you just want some stability in what you create.

Finding a place under my 340 for an engine support has been tough. The only place that I found was the oil pan "flange". I cut two pieces of 1-1/2" square aluminum extrusion and placed one end under the oil pan flange (on both sides of the pan) and then let the other ends rest on a 1/2" piece of hardwood on the floor. The engine and tranny are now resting on these two rails, but I am curious how others have supported their small blocks from underneath when pulling their tranny's. Any pictures?

Thanks

I have all ways been in the back yard under the shade tree in the dirt doing mine since I was 15 with my first mopar.

I use a short piecs of 2x6 on the ground, sit a small bottle jack on it,use a short 1x4 under the sump of the oil pan.

I have never bent the pan that way myself.

I then use a floor jack under the pan of the trans,i use a small square piece of 3/8 plywood between the jack and trans pan.

you should be ok with it the way you have it,only concern I would have on the pan rail lke that would be all the weight is centerd to those 2 spots not spred over more of the pan rail.

check those bolt when you are done to make sure the gasket did not smoosh down and lose bolt torque in those spots.

one time I helped someone put a 727 in a van they had up high on 4 jack stands. the jack would not lift it that high.

I used a 3 foot round tree log with a 16 foot 3x12 scalfold board to lift it like a seesaw. plenty of leverage so I could hold it up there while he moved it on to the dowl pins and start the bolts.

I have made a square base out of short 2x4 adding more boards lifting the trans up as I go.

tilt the rear down add a board under the front of pan, lift the rear and add a board under the back. lay one on each side and repete till it is up ther high enuff.

I have done it with out a jack when I was 22, but I just cant lift it like that now that I am 48.

but I still do it the hard way no matter what.

good luck and be safe under anything jacked up. remeber safty first.

I turned wrenches professionally for over twenty years, supported the engine a few times cause I was told I had to... Fought the job because the trans wouldn't drop out easily due to interference with the tunnel... Tried not supporting the engine & I've done it that way ever since... Wheres it gonna go? the engine's weight is nearly balanced on the mounts, when the trans is attached the tranny jack should be supporting it.. & if your worried about it falling out the drag link prevents that...

While I was getting the lengths of my engine supports correct, I lowered the tranny down too much and I had no support under the tranny or the engine. The tranny/engine just hung there with only the engine mounts. I only did this for a couple of minutes and then I put the supports under the pan flange.

I then wondered what it would hurt if there were no supports under the engine once the tranny was off. I assumed that the engine would have pivoted farther down than it did and this surprised me.
My concern is that the tranny will be at the shop for a few weeks and I did not want the engine just hanging there while I was doing some other cleanup work under the car.

Thanks for the replies!!

The exhaust system will help hold it in place also. There is always the risk of trashing oil pressure senders, distributor caps, etc though, if there is no support under engine. Fans can interfere with shrouds too.

I just received a hint from my tranny guy to use the steering drag link as a support after the tranny is removed. If I remember right, there is about an inch or so clearance between the bottom of the pan and the drag link. I may stick a wood spacer in there and give that a shot. This would give me more room to move around under the car and not to have to worry about knocking into a support post.

It's been awhile since I've done a SB trans removal, I think you can jack the motor up enough(remove the distributor cap before removing the trans ) to slide a short piece of 2x4 wood stud under the oil pan and drag link Thats what I do with the BB cars when having the trans out, that or use a racthet strap wrap around the torsion bars under the oil pan lots of ways to skin that cat
