Hi, My Mopar has an A-833 overdrive tranny. It has about 150.000 miles on it, and received a new clutch and throw-out bearing about one year ago. Recently, it started singing when cruising in 4th gear. The whine is not very loud...I can't hear it with the radio on low. The noise is the same level at any speed in 4th gear, and it stops when I take my foot off the gas, and when I push the clutch pedal in.
The noise is not annoying, but I would like to know what is causing it, because hopefully I can drive it for another year before I have it entirely rebuilt.
Thanks, Steve

Iron case or aluminum? Aluminum cases have a problem with the unbushed countershaft wearing into the case. Not sure if this is the problem but if OD runs off that shaft it could cause a noise.

I am sure you have check the fluid level. i ran one and found when i noticed the noise then checked it. it was empty. refilled it and it was ok but allways had a roar after that. low pitch and in gear only.

can you hear anything whil in N and at idle?

If the tranny fluid level is okay try changing the fluids, if you haven't in the last 100,000 miles I use to run straight ATF in my non O.D. 833, they never made noise unless there was a phisciycal(SP?) fault. I did a trans for a freind who trans, non O.D. 1971 A body, made noise in all ears except 4th gear(direct). The main shaft(output) had been ate up where the needles bearings ride on from inside the input shaft I had it welded up with a really hard welding rod and turn back down to stock size by a old timer who had rebuilt H.D. truck trans years ago back when labor was cheaper than parts where

Mine sighs and moans. It has for all 24 years I've had it. I kind of like it that way.

Pilot bearing only comes into play if the clutch is depressed when the engine is running , otherwise going down the road it's locked in place by the clutch .

Nice thought though.

change the fluid , 4th is 3rd in a non od trans , it's probably time of a rebuild .

I'm back...It is an aluminum case, and there is no noise in neutral. The gear oil was changed a year ago when the new clutch went in. SAE 75W-90. (I forget what brand) It is still at the proper level. I guess I'll keep on drivin' it with two fingers crossed and see if it gets louder. It comes off the road in about 12 months to rebuild the engine and tranny.
Thanks everyone for your help!
