After searching high low and sideways I finally found (to me anyways) the holy grail of obscure transmissions. A lockup A999 out of soon to be mine 85 B250/318 passenger van I bought for parts.

One owner van that the guy maintained fairly well over its lifespan, its got approx 230K on the original transmission that was given regular fluid/filter changes.

I am looking to do good stockish rebuild on the transmission and then drop it into my 79 B200/318. I looked in the usual places and besides going through the dealership for the hard parts like planetarys and snap rings. I couldnt find a whole lot for it ? The double wrap rear band part number I have from the 85 parts catalog comes back as no good with mopar ? Is it the same band as the newer 42/44 RH/RE transmissions ? Does anyone in the aftermarket offer new or remaned planetary units for these or is Mopar the only source ? I'm sure theres more i'm forgetting but those two things are what came to mind right now.

Thanks.

Isn't that just a 904 with overdrive? I believe they're all based on the 727.

It's an "HD" version of the 904, came behind 360's. I think it got a better band and an extra clutch. If John sees this he can fill us in better.

The last time I went there and they proceeded to lose a very hard to find part of mine. They can go to hell.

pretty much. I knew going in that it was a 318 so to find it still had the 999 transmission was an unexpected bonus.

Does anyone offer new/rebuilt planetaries or are they going to be a dealer only item ? I see CRT lists several for the 727 but nothing for the 904 family.

Planetaries in the 3-speeds don't usually go bad because they're only used in the lower two gears...unlike the OD's which run constantly. If and when one fails just replace it with a servicable used unit.

Got all the non dealer only parts ordered besides a cast pan and band strut. Dealer parts ordering tomorrow and then the fun starts. I have done a few transmissions before, this is my first automatic.

So, a 318 usually had a 998... What makes you sure that this is a 999?
Let us know how many clutch disks, etc.

5 in the front, 4 in the rear.
I know it is the original unit to the Van and the options sticker calls out A999 specifically.

I'm assuming they went with the 999 vs 998 atleast in B-vans because of the extra weight its always hauling around. The parts catalog makes no mention of the 998 at all.

I believe the 318 mostly used a 904. The 998 and 999 were more common behind the 360. The 904 has 3 forward clutches while the 998 has 4 and the 999 has 5. The 998 and 999 also have a lower 1st and 2nd gear ratio than the 904 does.

The A998 (also referred to as the 904-1) was introduced in '74 specifically for use behind the 318. The low gearset didn't arrive until '80.
