Would I be able to "bolt in" a 70 grill in place of my 72 Cuda grill or are the headlight buckets in a different position? What differences would there be? ie. screw hole locations, headlights, parking lights etc?

Thanks

There are alot of things that would need to be changed. The 1972 fenders have bolted in metal headlight brakets, they are welded in on 1970 and configured differently.
The 1970 turn signals are now in the grill requiring a different 1970 only lower grill, and now requiring a different headlight harness for the turnsinal change.
The header panel is 1970 only and would need to be changed.
It might be possible to fabricate ways around the header and headlight bucket situation, but it may also be more trouble than it is worth.

I don't understand why it seems to be so popular to change 72-74 Cudas into 70 or 71 clones. It might make sense for Challengers since the 72 - 74s are butt-azz ugly, but 72-74 Cudas are good looking cars as long as you remove the bumper guards.

The later Cuda grilles are similar enough to the 70 models that I can't see why anyone would bother.

I happen to think that my 73 Challenger (with 72 bumpers) is a damn fine looking car. Good thing that opinions are like azz-holes..everybodys got one

Well the deal is this. The car already has a 70/71 tailpanel in it with a set of 71 tail lights and the turn signals have been shaved. Soooo, I've been considering the 70 clone idea.

This is the way I bought it.

Thanks

Got it.

I do not know for sure all the details but they are very very differnt.

How hard to swap, I'm not sure, but even the header panel is different.

I would think that I would get a grill and see what works and what doesn't.

Hopefully somebody will chime in that has done it.

I was thinking about this. Ive known the issues with the swap. I got my 72 cuda with a cracked grille that i repaired so you would have to put your eyes a foot from it to have a chance at seeing the repair. I figured the easiest way to convert it would be to cut the extra two fins out of the center and shape the center fin to look like a 70. It'd be close enough. Heck, its only a 72.

I just picked up a 72 and the only thing I don't like about the grill is somebody painted it black. At least I think, none were available in black correct?
It's also got billboards so.............

On my Challengers & Assorted B bodies from 72 and up the black grills were molded in black and the silver grills were molded in silver.

I do not know if they did the same on the Cuda's

First price a 70 grill and then decide if it is worth buying it and then risk ruining it trying to make it fit.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Correct. There was a package available in 1972 where a body color painted grill was part of the package, but otherwise, silver was it.

AMD is showing the same part number for the front Valance on a 1970 and 1972-74.

https://www.autometaldirect.com/store/pr...-Front-Valance=

I guess the next question is would a lower grill filler panel for a 70 fit on a 72?

I think you're talking about the lower part of the header.....it wraps around the back of the grill and has a strip that's at the bottom. As mentioned above the header is a '70 only piece. Take a look at AMD's site and you'll see the difference.

Will this piece physically fit into a 72. Fastener positions will vary of course.
