I was spraying lube into small block cylinder for winterization and the little plastic straw fell off and into cylinder. Gonna be tough to fish out. Im thinking it would vaporize and get blown out of there on re-starting.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Don't start it!!! It will not vaporize instantly!!! It could hang a valve open a little bit and bend it when the piston comes up!!!

I did that before, on my mustangs 4.6.

I was able to take the plenum off and suck it out with a vacuum.

Ugh! I should have quit after fogging thru carb. This is in a bilge and hard to reach which is why it happened in the first place...this is not gonna be fun.

Anyway thanks for replies...

I had that happen once & I ran it no problem. could duct tape the end of your shop vac down to a piece of vac line of the appropriate diameter & see if you could fish it out

You may get another straw just like it and see if brake clean or lacquer thinner or something like that will melt it. If so, you can then spray some of it in the cylinder to at least partially melt it and then run it to do away with the rest of it.

I would slowly bring it up to TDC (to get it as close to the hole as possible) then tape a hose to the end of a shop vac as mentioned and try to suck it out.

Good luck...

Oh for pete's sake.

I once dropped a check ball from my carb down the plenum.

I said nuts to it and ran the 318, no problems and it's been over 10 years now.

if you take take the springs of the valve and let it drop down youll have plenty of room to fish it out.

That little straw is not going to hurt the engine. Even if it does get hung up in a valve if your valve springs aren't strong enough to crush that little tube of plastic you've got other problems. Start that sucker and let it melt away!

I had a 1/4-20 nut fall down an intake runner, fired it off and it made a heck of a noise till it spit it out the header. sounded like the rattle ball in a can of paint while idling.

didnt seem to hurt anything, ran it for a few yrs after that. when i R&R the head it looked like a shotgun blast with birdshot.

thousands of small nicks in the top of piston but none on the head or cyl. exhast vale had normal carbon pitting.

so maybe he is not makeing that up.

with the plastic straw??? I would think it would melt and not damage anything.

but then again the melted plastic could get into the ring land and stick a ring in the groove or something like that.

do you feel lucky? then roll the dice.

if in doubt??? get it out.

I've had a few valve seals make the journey to the bottom of the pan...No harm done.

that's what I was thinking would be a worst case scenerio tho IMO it'd likely just burn up but I would fish or vacuum it out (1) for peace of mind and (2) to accept that mistakes do happen (Murphys law) and (3) that you have the skill to rectify any adversity that does comes your way (cause it wont be the last). Holler how it turns out

I had the camera from an inspection camera get chopped off in a cylinder when my neighbors kid saw the pretty red button hanging off the side of the car and pushed it. It was a remote start button and I had the camera in a cylinder of my brand new engine. I thought about leaving it in there after trying to get it out for a day and a half but decided no to.
I was able to get it out by rolling the motor over until the piston was all the way up the camera would roll down just below the spark plug hole I took a plastic art paint brush and put a little gorilla snot ( 3M weatherstrip adhesive ) on it poked around a few times but finally stuck to it and I got it out. A plastic straw would be easier because it will bend a little to get it out of the plug hole. The camera only fit out of the hole one way so it took some time to get lucky.

I would be inclined to just leave the plastic straw in there I would think it would melt and burn up turning to harmless ash the will come out of the exhaust. I think this is a coin toss situation.

Nope, serious.

Heck, it was "just" a 318 and I had a 360 on the stand as back up anyway and it would have been just as easy to swap engines as it would have been to pull both heads looking for it.

Years later I swapped the 318 into another ride (still have it) and I pulled the heads to look. A few little divots in the top of the piston is all.

Melling std volumn...I was a tad bit surprised when I saw the parts on the pick up, truck had good oil pressure, but I pulled the pump apart...Had a few marks so I tossed it.

Some of the the intake valve guides were broken off too...

I'd be afraid the melted plastic would cause some damage? I wouldn't use glue. It might get in the cylinder. It's a tough one but maybe you could use a coat hanger and attach some duct tape to it with a sticky side out and fish the straw out? One layer sticky side down and overlap it with the layer sticky side out and roll it under at the end. I think it would not be too thick to fit thru the plug hole and should be safe enough it won't fall off? Can you see the straw with a flash light?

I've had this happen a few times, I take a air hose and blow it in the hole and the tube flys out.

Not feeling too lucky plus ticked off at myself for letting this happen, so I was determined to get it out...

I had to remove this little wooden partition in the bilge, then doing a headstand, I could see the spark plug hole... (Thru the hole is the little fiberoptic light thingy.)

This was encouraging but the rest wasn't all that easy. I brought piston up to make it easier to reach. And straw got binded up in there. (?at piston top or in a closing valve?) So just for more drama it came out in two pieces.

Mission accomplished.

Is oiling each cylinder even helpful after a thorough fogging thru carb?

Thanks to all posters.

For years, I've just run the motors while I spray fogger into the carb until they choke out. Never pulled the plugs to fog the cylinders seperately. I've never had an issue.

Good to see you got it figured out.
