I have the seal and once I get the front band adjusted (as explained in another thread), I am going to replace the output shaft seal that is in the housing extension. Replacing it I can do, but I am trying to determine why this seal needs replaced.
This is the third time that I have replaced this seal in 10-12 years. I don't drive the car allot each year and it just seems that I am replacing this seal way to often.
The first seal was the standard length seal and I also replaced the bushing. The second one is the one with the rubber boot. The one that I currently have is the standard seal again. The fluid is leaking out of the output shaft and going down the drive shaft and leaking down the differential assembly. I have splatter tranny fluid under my car from flinging off of the drive shaft.
Besides replacing the seal again, what else am I missing? Too much fluid? Input shaft OD damaged (it is nice and smooth but I will check it again), to much pressure in the tranny?
I don't know, I am just throwing out weird ideas.

Thanks again.

Use the booted seal , that is what was on it from the factory , that boot protects the seal itself from rod grime . How does the yoke look ? if the area where the seal rides is not smooth it's going to eat seals.

Also make sure the plug at the back of the yoke is not leaking .

John,
I will call and get the boot/seal on order. This is the one that is currently installed.

""Also make sure the plug at the back of the yoke is not leaking .""
I am not familiar with this plug. Where is it located?

Do you mean a plug on the yoke that is attached to the drive shaft?

Thanks

John's talking about the tin plug stuck in the u-joint end of the driveshaft yoke. Sometimes they can leak there. It was a common leak area on some chevs at dealer too. We used to clean, then epoxy the outside of it.

I never noticed one in there. Does anyone have a picture?
I will be able to pull the drive shaft in the next couple of days. This will give me some "heads-up" as to what to look for. I will hold off on the new seal until I can review the yoke.

Thanks guys!!

The seal in this picture you attached is the booted seal, the boot is a tad shorter than the factory boot from in the day but it still does its job.

As said the plug is on the rear of the yoke

When I get the yoke/drive shaft removed, I will see if the plug is leaking. If so, then I will JB Weld it.
I was not even aware of this plug and that it could cause a leak. I will check it out.

Thanks allot!!

Here's a pic of the soft plug in the end of the slip yoke. It could be leaking around the plug or, in some rare cases, the plug has a small hole.
