Is it possible for this to make make noise when it goes bad?
I think I may have a bad one in my motor.
The first time I took my car out for a quick drive (after a lengthy redo) it ran fine for a lttle while, after a bit it started to run pretty bad but managed to make it back home. Ever since then it has been making a noise, louder than a lifter tap but less than a knock; and definitely in the block somewhere. Now when I try to start the car there is no fuel in the carb. I can prime the carb and get it started, but once it drops down in revs to idle the fuel bowl empties out. I'm thinking that at lower RPM's it doesnt have enough length left to pump with any pressure. I am hoping the noise and fuel issues are related, but never knew a fuel pump to make noise. The push rod has beeen in this motor since the 90's, but never used as it always had an electric pump when in my other car.
Have a new pushrod on the way, but trying to calm my fears on more damage in the motor.

Probably a good idea to go electric now anyway, as long as noise is gone. Was trying to keep it simple and stock for once, that will teach me.

most likely the spring on the fuel pump has weakened which has caused slop between the arm, push rod and cam. as JohnRR stated, i'd just go back to to the electric but would very definately change my oil!

Fuel pump is/was brand new, only pulling in and out of garage, onto a trailer and idling time. But these days that could be enough. Spring seems pretty strong, hard to push lever down. I'll replace anything right now as long as the motor isn't hurt.

Such a shame too, she looks so nice. As long as you dont start it.

i would do a real good inspection of that cam lobe. pull the dizzy out, get a flashlight and really check it. when you get the new rod make sure you measure each one to be sure your issue is the rod. i would seriously consider JohnRR's suggestion. and yes, she sure is a looker!

OK got a new pushrod, took out the old one. Both same length.
Checked the eccentric on the cam looks good.

Decided to run an electric pump I had sitting around in place of the mechanical, and car runs fantastic. So my new mechanical pump was garbage.

So now I'm going to run an electric pump, no more mechanical. But question is where. I'm assuming that leaving plumbed in by the front of the engine isnt going to be a good place for it, or is there a type of electric pump that can live there.

Still have my original noise which I thought was a knock, but seems much quieter now, more like mechanical valvetrain noise even though my engine is a hydraulic setup. One problem at a time though.

Electric pumps are designed to PUSH fuel not pull it , it's not going to live very long in the engine compartment.

Put it back at the tank over the rear axle in a safe spot.

Here's a market segment screaming for a product... an in the tank pump on the pickup with a fuel level gauge sender that works ...

Noisy valvetrain? Let me guess , a Comp Cams XE grind ...

No idea on the cam. This was my old blower motor that I had after going bigger. Took off the 906 heads and put on a set of 915 and thats all. I'm sure cam wasn't anything wild as the motor was about 20% underdriven when I got it. Changing cams was on my spring project list.

Guess I'll put the pump up where you suggest and put the regulator up front where the mechanical pump was.

Thanks for the input.

Yes this happened to me in the 70's it wore the rod down 3/8 of an inch and my car would not go up a hill. When I would turn around and get the car going down hill the gravity effect would take over and it would start and I did just like you are going to do put in a new one only to have it saw it down just like the other one in a month or so. you may want to save your time and money and just buy a electric pump or change the cam which I am sure you do not want to do. Good luck

OK noise turns out to be a bit of piston slap, so not going to worry about that now.
Going to replace the fuel pump permanently with an electric one. Looks like with reading around that the Carter p4070 might be a decent choice, or should I go one step up to p4594 since I plan on running a regulator either way? And car runs a holley carb. Also is it OK to mount over the rear even though they are technically supposed to be lower then the tank?

The lower, and closer to the tank the better. You are in a sense trying to create a siphon effect. So the pump doesn't have to work as hard.

I like the rotary vane pumps, they are so much quieter than the plunger pumps.

I run a Carter GP4594 on my 440 Ramcharger.

I ran the same pump on the 78 Crew Cab truck with a 440, and had years of reliable service. Was working fine when I sold it, new owner never had issue with it, and was still going when he swapped to a cummins.

The Carter pumo I listed is a bit big, and may take some creative engineering to get it where you want it. Its just big enough that it wont fit the inside of the frame on the RC. And was temp mounted on the outside of the frame rail.

It will be relocated or I will have a shield box fabbed for it before I consider it a final install.

Car is all stock appearing so would prefer to mount it up and out of the way. On my Charger being original wasn't a concern so pump hung down low to be under the pickup. Mounting up above the rear appeals to me on my Coronet, but dont want it to leave me stuck either.
