I broke a valve spring on my engine and when it broke, it spun around and chewed up the spring pocket that was machined into the head. I had been having trouble with metal in the oil ever since I put these -1s on the engine, and as a matter of fact, it blew up the first day out with the new heads on it...

Well, come to find out after I pulled it apart last night that the metal around the spring pockets is so thin in spots, the springs can break chunks of it off and get into the oil.

Look at this pic of the spring pocket that broke.

See where it had been breaking off prior to the spring breaking? And look at the spring right beside it. See where its been breaking off and getting into the oil? There is a piece about ready to go....

Just thought I would post this and save someone a years worth of headache and broken parts like I have had....

I bought a used set of 440-1 recently that had the same deal. the springs eating up the heads around the spring pockets I went ahead and machined them flat and bought a set of hardened spring seats that center on the valve guides for my size springs

The price difference between hardened valve spring shims and cheap valve spring shims isn't that big of a deal. BUT people want to save a buck so they use the cheap ones.

Pretty sure it was hemi Fred that posted the link showing how much a valve spring rotates in the pocket at different rpm's. I couldn't find the link but it is a good one to watch.

Whats the proper spring cups? Its a 1.55 OD spring supplied by Bullet. #VS8100

As you can see they have the locators for the inner springs on them already.

The next small block will be a Chevy Felix.

I could have bought 4 or 5 for what I have went through trying to be a Mopar purist.

And I would bet a Brodix or a Dart head would have the spring seats cast properly to boot.

Mine are .060 thick .730 ID and correct for the spring.

when i foolishly ordered my heads thru ICH i asked them to be machined for 1.625 spring cups, "you don't need them" was their answer," you can do everything with a 1.550 spring". ok i'll go with that so i asked them to be machined for 1.550 cups, "you don't need them, spring locators are much better", well they were wrong & i experianced exactly what you posted. first time the heads came off i had them machined for cups & lowered the cup seat position 0.040 so i could go for 2" installed if i needed. those spring locator shims were shyte.

If they cast about 1/8 inch more material around the spring seats it wouldn't be a problem with 1.550 springs. I would imagine if you machined them for 1.625 springs it would also take care of it because it would clean off those thin spots that are just about guaranteed to chip and flake off due to the spring harmonics.

That can happen on most any head.Use hardened shims or as mentioned spring cups.Cups can be purchased for most spring diameters.

I noticed this on the Indybrocks, and eddy heads, and I run a spring cup to locate the spring in the pocket. Accually Dan looked the part numbers up for me and sent me the cups and springs for my cam.

it looks to me like whoever cut the heads to accept those spring locators used a cutter that increased the diameter of the pocket, probably to about 1.640 or so(unless the OD of that locator is actually way smaller than 1.550).

as the heads come supplied from Indy, the pocket is only 1.550, and the small step at the base of the guide has too large of an OD for a locator to fit over it, so someone machined those heads to accept the locators.
also, if the springs you're using are actually like 1.560 or 1.580(also common sizes these days), then you can end up with a situation like what you have, unless the pocket is opened up to accept the bigger spring.

i have a customer that ran some SR heads with a roller cam and 1.550 springs in his S/G roadster for over ten years without anything to locate the springs other than the pocket machined into the head, and never had an issue with anything getting chewed up or ending up in the pan.

when i set those heads up for over-sized springs(1.625+) and/or spring cups, i remove the rest of whats left of the original pocket to keep those pieces from breaking off.

IMO, its not Indys fault you had this issue with the pieces breaking away from the heads, but rather whoever machined those heads for the locators and didnt trim away what was left behind.

when i have gotten heads from Indy that are already cut for the 1.625 springs and cups, all that extra stuff around the pocket is gone.

in any case.......just grind away whats left there, and you'll be good to go.

my EZ heads from Dwayne have been on my engine since 07. just had the valve covers off a month ago and looked carefully at my spring pockets and all looked good. i was changing out the comp 829s that have been in the engine since 07 and they looked and felt like new also.

thats how i do it too. grind away all the excess material after machining for the cups or locators.
