I was wondering what type of fluid a manual steering box from a 68 Barracuda takes? Also, how can you tell when it is full? Do you just fill it up to the plug?

Love them 68 MOPARS! GTS 340 auto, Charger R/T 440 4-speed, Superbee 383 auto, GTX 440 auto, D100 (new front frame 5.7 hemi - in process), Formula S 340 4-Speed A/C (it's green), 383 auto Roadrunner (maybe a hemi - waiting) and a 68 W200 Power Wagon. Drivers: 07 Cummins and 14 Ecodiesel 4x4.

It's filled with grease , I remember seeing something posted one time, think it was something that ebooger put in a mag article, about mixing grease and some type of gear oil to make it pourable and fill it that way.

Do you have a factory service manual for any of the cars you own?

Yes I do. I have a 69 Dodge service manual. I was looking in it and could not see what they suggested that you fill it with. I am sure it is there, but I could not find it. I was hoping someone knew off the cuff.

Unless you mix something up CV joint grease is about as you can get to the old stuff. Warm it and pour it in or use a needle fitting on a grease gun.

How about 600wt oil that antique car guys use in their steering boxes/transmissions/rears?

I remember that article. I think he mixed the concoction in an old saucepan and warmed it on the stove just enough to make it pourable.

a tube of MP high temp lube 4318064 and 2 or 3 ounces of SAE 90 gear oil. With there being low stress on the mesh of the steering gears I think you could get by with most anything

Thanks for all the help guys.

I finally found what to fill it with in the shop manual I have. (68 Dodge) I must have looked over it 5 times. It says use MOPAR steering box grease. Apparently, they must have sold it at one time. It said if you can't find it to use a quality grade of bearing grease. Surprisingly to me it said and do not use gear oil. It said to pack it in to the top of the teeth on the spline and that is it. So I guess I'll try that with some red grease.

The factory used what was called a "pourable grease" that would flow when heated slightly. It was not pourable at room temperature.
It does not need to be in a liquid state to do its job properly in the manual steering gear box.
