Does the carpet in a Challenger need to be cut to reveal the console brackets or are the screws just driven through the carpet?

If it needs to be cut, where is the proper place to cut it?

Do the screws just screw into the slots in the brackets or is there a sheet metal nut?

Thanks!

Disclaimer ... I don't know how the E body carpet is exactly cut ...

Carpet is cut so the brackets are exposed , you can cut it as you see fit as long as you keep it as one piece , the screws just go into the slots , no nut plates of any kind.

the carpet is sliced to expose the console brackets, you want to mount the console securely on top of the brackets, no carpet between the console and bracket(s) the screws cut their own thread

Is this an auto or manual? It's easy to cut the carpet too low. If you have to cut around the auto shift linkage be very careful. I ended up tracing the outline of the console with painters tape so I wouldn't slice down too far.

It is a 4 speed. And yes my concern is cutting too low. I just want to do something that at least remotely resembles the factory installation.

On my 70 Challenger 4-speed car I cut around the console brackets so the carpet will lay flat on the floor hump. The carpet is cut tight to the brackets.
The screws thread into the slits.

Thanks for the replies!

Can anyone tell me exactly what fasteners are used to screw into the brackets? How about the shift boot trim ring?
