was at a local car show and after setting there for about 2 hrs in the heat my car started pushing gas out the vent tube , just put on a new gas cap cause the old one was leaking when pulling away from stop ligts etc, it was a none vented cap , new one is none vented , should I be using a vented cap???

the correct gas cap is based on how your car is configured - is it a closed or open system ? Has anyone changed any aspect of your fuel system (filler neck, etc)....

If the old cap was leaking, it was essentially vented (even if it was designed as non-vented when it was new). I mistakenly put a non-vented locking cap on my 68 Barracuda and it would draw a vacuum in the tank and gradually shut off gas after about 30 minutes of driving. I'm thinking the emissions caps started around 71/72? Does/did your 'runner have a charcoal cannister under the hood?

EVAP started in '70, so it could go either way with the car and parts.
BTW, the 70s had a line up to the breather, the vapors were stored in the crankcase, not a charcoal cannister!

no canister or line going to crank case , old cap was non vented type to, my vent line from the tank goes up into the trunk then back under the car on the pass side somewhere near front spring mount

I had the same question on here last week but didn't get much help. So I'm going to buy both since they don't cost that much and see how they work. I have a problem of smelling gas after a new tank install and I believe my old cap is the culprit. Good luck.

The system you have is an "open system" which takes a vented cap. But again, you need to verify you have the correct filler neck and gas tank since you said its been replaced...
