Here is a thread I posted a while back on another forum documenting a 3-point seat belt installation I did in case anyone is interested.

First off, let me say that I in no way claim to be an expert in this type of installation and in no way recommend that anyone do it this way or that my way is best. I purchased this kit from http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/nonresebe.html and anyone attempting this should follow only their instructions & recommendations and not mine.

Sorry...anyway, the belts I chose are the ones designed for a convertible/hardtop as I wanted to mount the shoulder harness pivot behind the front seat below the quarter windows.

The belts came through a much brighter red than I had wished, but since it's the only shade of red they offer in this style, I'm stuck with it. It shouldn't be too bad though.

The first order of business for me was to engineer some way to stop the front seat backs from freely pivoting forward as they naturally do. When you are belted into a seat with shoulder harnesses, you don't want the seat back coming forward in a crash and crushing you between it and the shoulder belt. The problem was to figure how to make an easy-to-use, almost "factory" style latch so that I could easily pivot the seats forward for rear access without it being  too "home engineered" looking.

I made spring loaded latches from some flat steel and other hardware I had, taking advantage of the existing upright seatback frame and the heavy pin/stop.

I welded a washer on the end of the pin to help locate the latch once engaged. I wanted to get the spring tension just right so that it's not too hard to push and release, but enough to hold the latch firmly on the pin.

It took a lot of experimentation with cardboard templates to get the angles and design the way I wanted it but I think it turned out easy to use and not too noticeable once the mechanism is painted satin black (which I still have to do) and the trim goes back on the seats.

Continuing on...I had to make up extensions for the part that bolts to the trans tunnel because they were a bit too short to reach the factory mounting points.

They supply you with a mount plate for the shoulder harness pivot that you can either weld or bolt in. I have always welded them in before but opted to bolt it in this time because it was easy to get to the back to run the nuts on.

I just marked the spots and drilled the holes, slipped the plate behind the panel and bolted it in. Very simple.

Then I drilled the floor next to the rear seat for the the retractor unit...and bolted it down using the supplied L-brackets and hardware including big fender washers underneath.

Then I replaced the inner panels, bolted in the shoulder harness pivot.

And snapped on the cover.

Then I bolted the other end to the factory mounting point on the rocker panel beside the front seat.

And it's finished.

This was definitely the easiest one I have done yet. No real fabricating to speak of other than the extensions.

It fits me really well and now I feel more secure in the car .

As I said before, I don't like the shade of red, but when no-one is in the car and the belts are stowed, you really don't see much of them.

I went to the hardware store and bought some clear vinyl tubing, slit it down one side and applied it to the chrome trim on the side of the seat where the belt rubs. The trim has some very sharp edges and this should help to prevent the belt webbing from getting frayed from constant use. Looking in the car with the door open, you can barely tell it's there.

This is what it looks like after the new interior was installed.

So far, I've retrofitted these belts into a '39 Pontiac, '54 Chevy, '28 Ford Model A, '70 Mustang and my Charger. It's a relatively easy upgrade that I think is important. Hope it helps someone.

I have been looking for an un-butchered set of red door panels for YEARS!

Nice install even if you did drill a hole in my dream.

Thanks...I think

Believe me, I didn't want to do it. I looked for any alternative spot for the mount, but there just isn't any. If I can find a set that's a darker red, I think it will blend in better and not be so noticeable.

I've been in enough crashes to know that in the end for me, it's a small price to pay. Especially with my son riding frequently along.

I am in no way saying your work is bad. It looks great. I just hate to see a part that I have passed on twenty times because it has holes or cracks get holes drilled in it. Safety first!
