What was the production run (start month - end month) for the 1968 Coronet (St. Louis plant)? Looking at a '68 Coronet R/T with a build date of 701 on the fender tag. I assume this is July 01, 1968 or would it be 1967?? What should the CASTING date on the block be? I've heard 90 days prior to the build date. Is that true?? Want to know what else to look for other than the numbers matching. Too many scams and restampings going on Also, should the VIN stamping be on the back of the block by the oil sending unit or on the pad by the oil pan? Again, my research is telling me either or pending on when the car was built. Thanks! Steve

I have a 68 Coronet R/T that was built on July 15 at St Louis. From what Ive been told by the "experts," my car was built on the last day of production at STL in 1968 so you also have a pretty late build car. You could have some 1969 parts on it like the leading edge of the hood should be drilled for the '69 grille insert and your door buttons might be chrome instead of black.
I think the 90 day rule is pretty accurate, my block has a May 1968 casting date but the VIN is not stamped on the oil pan rail and I havent checked the back of the block

Should the vin # be stamped on the back of the block by oil sending unit or the pad by the oil pan? Is the Vin # that's stamped on the trans be on the bellhousing edge (automatic) or by the trans pan? Thanks

Vin SHOULD be on the bellhousing flange as that was standard for 68 , but you would have to look to see if the engine has the machined pad first .
The auto trans never had the VIN stamped on the pan rail , it moved from the bellhousing flange to a raised pad that was cast on the passenger side of the transmission bellhousing area.
