could you have say a 70 rr parked next to a 70 gtx and both cars have the same vin with the exception of the rm and the rs?

Can the production number part of any two VINs in the same model year be the same?

Two cars could have identical VINs with the exception of the assembly plant. This doesn't hold true for cars that were only built at one plant (like convertible a-bodies).

Well knowing MOPAR anything is possible. My father worked at the assembly plant in Belvidere for over 30 years. The stories I could tell. Anyway, my brother bought a brand new car that was assembled there and bought from a local dealer that according to the numbers can never exist. It had an engine that was not an option, options that didn't exist
and a build sheet that was one of a kind. All the paperwork was in order from the factory though.

I have seen cars that vin numbers were royally screwed up when they were pulled from the line to have something repaired before plugged back in.

Mopar had some real challenges in the 60's 70' and 80's. That is what makes many of them so unique.

Actually because they did make typos in the VIN tags it would be possible, but it wouldn't be intentional.

When my father worked at the plant it was not as uncommon as you might think, that when a car was an employee purchase, certain liberties were taken on the production line. On my brothers car, they dropped in a motor that was not an option, added all sorts of other items to the interior and drivetrain. He had a rough time getting parts from the parts store though as he always had to say I have this motor or trans, don't worry about the car! He even had a really nice factory tag riveted in on the car that said specially manufactured for.... wish he wouldn't have totaled that car......... can you imagine what that could have been worth!

How's that? Is that what Belvedere built?

I'm anxious to learn more about this car.

Great guess on the C body.

I will look and see if my brother or father has any old documentation, knowing my father, he still has something somewhere.

The point I was trying to make is that it was done more often than people might think. Don't think for a minute that employee cars were not
tweaked slightly or radically.

Chrysler also was the only one of the big three to make concept cars for the auto show that were actually road worthy. Has anyone heard of the Dodge Diablo that turned up a few years back?
The concept car was supposedly destroyed as they "all were after the show", however many were not truly destroyed but live out their days locked away in the designers garage. The Diablo now resides in Chicago in a private collection, and yes it is very real and very cool.

These things exist and they are out there. I wish some other UAW brat would chime in and add to the stories. This would make a great topic on its own.

Was interested in learning what kind of car it was.

This is not true.

I think your perception about a bunch of things is slightly off.

It is true. Ford and Chevy did not make cars that were "real and road worthy" in other words, Chrysler build cars on real frames and chassis.

As for my brothers car, I drove it.

A handful were built like that. Depends who you
knew and where you fell in the UAW. My father was
high enough up and had close friends managing
plants in Detroit.

I ran a model shop and engineered gauges for the top aftermarket high performance gauge manufacturer in the world. Don't think for minute,
that I don't have things that are one of a kind and that you could never own....

Dart 340,

I don't doubt that your stories might hold water, but I have a pretty good idea that you'd be taken far more seriously if you backed them up with some facts or some evidence to support them....

No, I agree. I will be call my brother and father to see if they have anything left as evidence on the car. My father probably knows of some others that they built as specials when he was at the plant. Since my brother still works for Chrysler he may have some other sources for the info. Even the old VIN tag would help.

I was hoping a few others would chime in on this. I know it went on. I am not saying it was always on the up and up in some occasions.
