440newport OP master Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 4,587 St. John's Newfoundland	I bought a MP orange box last summer to replace the dead FBO box I was running in my Mirada. The FBO box lasted about 6 years and I got less than one out of the orange box. I knew they had a high failure rate but I thought it would be better that a regular parts store box. I also heard they were made in China now, this one said "Made in USA" on it so I figured maybe it was one of the better older ones. I guess not. I threw on a spare crusty one I had and the car started right up again. I guess I'll just get a parts store box to replace it.

Both ballast type and non-ballast(12v) ECU's would be nice to choose from. FBO and Rev-n-nator are both testing their new ECU's. Who is it going to be!!!!!! 1970 YO7 A66 [Canadian Export] F8 Challenger 340 (Currently in shop for stroker assy.)

Its a cad plated piece, makes a -\|__\|- design....if that box overheats, the insides go melty melty...ever had the back of those things (insulation) melt and run down your firewall? Its not a pretty sight. I had a Chrome Box on my Dart for 5 years and nothing went wrong with it, I just wised up and put an MSD before I became a victim of the failure on one of my long trips. B5 Bee master Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 8,020 Pangaea	I have a couple of Orange boxes that have lasted 25 plus years. I also had one 8 years ago that lasted 1 month. Replaced it with the FBO box, it lasted 2 months. Replaced the FBO with a Chrome box and it is still going.

Also used one of those sharp star washers under each bolt. I'm sure there was a good ground. On the Mirada though, the box bolts directly to the inner fender apron. There's no bracket that allows an air gap. I may add one similar to what my NY'er has.

I have witnessed many failed MSD boxes at the track,and we don't log on any miles there. At least with a Mopar type box a replacement is easy to find if you have a failure out on the road. Anonymous Unregistered A	I ditched the POS ECU's and use MSD on anything that I want to actually start and run. I've drove them thousands of miles and never had an MSD fail. I can't say the same about ECU's.

My father told me after having two orange boxes fail first time out at the drag strip, that was enough of them he said. He said he put the chrome box in the car in the early eighties and it has had zero problems. He runs the box on the passenger side at the front of the rad cradle and it stays cool.This Challenger has seen the drag strip and now is only used as a street car.

Sinitro master Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 5,439 So Cal	Ironic.. This issue come up every few weeks.. One can get a chrome box for about $50 why cut corners with an orange box.. The chrome box in my RR has been in there 10 years, I did try an MSD box a couple of years back... Didn't run any better, put the MSD box in my son's car and reinstalled the chrome box... Just my $0.02..

Problem is the electronic conversion kit people buy comes with the orange box , you have to spend more to get the chrome box on top of the kit. Heck even the Crate motors are/were sold with that POS orange box. It took MP 30 plus year to supply the kit with a distributor that had an adjustable mechanical advance , how long will it take for them to change the orange box to stop pulling out the retard above 4000 rpm? MP are you listening ??? FIX the orange box or just sell the kit with the chrome box .

666 member Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 77 Cement Under Ground	JohnRR is correct.It takes Chrysler years to learn from the public. My father told me he buys the conversion kit off Mancinis at the mopar meets and they use to sub in the chrome box for 10 to 20 dollars more.

I've run a couple of 6AL's on street cars with many different motors and never had a problem. I have had them where they can get airflow over them, though. I DON'T use the little, ghey, blue wire connectors that come with them, though, and wire them up the RIGHT way!
