I think a second tool for this would be nice leaving the jack handy if needed during the process. It is the alignment while it mid-air that is the problem, I agree. The longer stud idea is a good one, not sure what kind of space I am going to have with an A-body tunnel. When I mocked in the car I installed the tranny/bell/block as one. Not sure I am going to do that this time with a fresh paint job in the engine compartment. 383, Hemi 4-Speed, AlterKtion, D60

TooMany62s top fuel Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 1,788 Greer, SC	My '62 sedan also has very limited tunnel clearance. It helps to let the rear of the motor tilt downward as far as possible. I also use some threaded rod to get it lined up as close as possible.

70Cuda383 Too Many Posts Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 21,345 Marysville, O-H-I-O	Without a doubt, the challenge is getting the splines to line up and mesh home just right so you can stab the gearbox all the way in. I've found that rotating it back and forth and rocking the back of the gearbox in a circular motion makes it the easiest to line it up and slide it home, however, I think the long threaded rod is a great idea! get the weight of the gearbox off your hands/jack, and give you the freedom to wiggle it around while getting the splines to line up Photobucket sucks

ahy master A Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 7,664 IN	I use a jack for all the reasons posted. Bottom line its safer and easier to get lined up without hurting anything. My JC Whitney transmission jack has worked fine. I just used alignment studs for a heavy iron transmission on a '47 Power Wagon per factory service manual guidelines. They really helped. Next time I do any transmission I'll use the studs. I made them from bolts... starting with the longest bolt that would leave clearance I cut the head off, tapered the end and ground small flats to fit a box wrench in case it was needed for removal.

jcastle1 super stock J Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 959 Cincinnati,Ohio	I strap the 4-speed tranny onto the jack pad and wench it down with a small tie down strap. It makes it easy to manuever,and never fall off the jack pad. Best trick I've learned on mine anyway.

DAYCLONA I Live Here Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 18,157 Mass	Seems every time I use a transmission jack, it's just a cumbersome affair, 727 or 883 I usually end up just muscling them in, whether the car is on ramps or a lift,....I'd much rather lift TKO 5spds though, they're only 115 lbs....never did weigh a 727 or 883 For the OP, if you don't muscle "heavy equipment" on a daily basis, you might be better off with a jack, just to be safe.....

TheTieWrapKid member Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 168 North Texas	I'd like to put a vote in for using the cheapo transmission jack like the Harbor Freight one shown. I think mine is a JC Whitney about 70 bucks a few years back. It uses a 1/2 inch drive and has an adjustable tray with wing nuts I think. I tie it down with the provided strap and add an additional rope to hold it down good. It beats the heck out of wrestling a four speed to your chest and then up and in. And I've never tried to muscle an automatic by myself - just too bulky. Sometimes the things don't go in that easy. If you have your cheapo tranny jack, you can back off at any time and have a beer while evaluating any necessary adjustments !!

I got the trans down out of the car no problem (back when I is in much better shape). But then I had to set it down. It slipped and landed on the end of my finger. A bunch of gauze and a tube of neosporen, and it healed. You have most of the suspension removed? I thought I would have issues getting the body back down at the correct height to get the K frame bolts started. What did you use as a lift point on the body? 383, Hemi 4-Speed, AlterKtion, D60
