Later switch. The later comb has an extra contact point to turn on the back up lights. So yeah now you can see the rooster comb would need to be replaced as well, as the extra point for reverse is between the park and neutral. Basically this comb is longer and has an extra tab. Just swap both and eliminate the back-up light wires from the system. I suppose the valvebody might need to be switched as well(?)
When the weather gets warmer, I will pull both apart and see just what needs to be done.
Still, never say can't , say how .
Of course the $45.oo dollar price isn't looking as bad. Might get a couple of those myself. Don't see 'em getting any cheaper.

If you are putting it into the later body style then yes the three prong plug needs to be used. If you are useing an older tranny this would need to be changed anyway or you would not have back up lights.
Pretty much renders the rest of my posts moot huh? At least you learned what a rooster comb is. I learned a little too. That's why I come here. I am always running off and doing things that can't be done.

You contardict yourself with this last statement. You said it can't be done, and then explain how they can. Hmmm.

Although they look different. it appears as though any could be used. The last comb seems to have a high spot where the middle one has a valley, that high spot would be for the back-up lights. After the neutral both combs ramp down to release the switch. For the sake of not having to do it twice I might just replce the rooster comb as well. Here is the picture that is in the tech archive article.

The first one was for pusg button trans the second one is the 66 thru 68 switch and the last one is the 69 & later switch






I Did not conterdict myself.I was addressing the fact you can't swap styles of switchs without swapping levers. Which was for the benefit of the original poster from whom you highjacked this thread.

Hello,

Can anyone tell me where I can get the "comb" for the 3 prong NSS for the A727 transmission, and what is it really called?
I have a '94 B250 van with backup light issues, and that may be the problem.

I have searched all over and was fortunate to find this thread.

The factory name for the roostercomb or cockscomb is "Lever, Manual Valve".

What is the issue with the BU lights? If they stay on in every gear, the plastic shoe is broken/missing...can't think of any other issue that would be the roostercomb's fault.

dont have any of the combs, try CRT for internal loose trans parts...

I used a 68 Charger 727 when I built my 70 Satellite. I had everything completed mechanically and working. After paint I started to assemble everything. When I hooked up the back-up lights I checked them with the key on in reverse and they worked. Little did I know they were on in d-2-1 also. So what everyone is saying is that since the 68 trans had a rooster comb for a single NSS when I installed the 3 prong NSS I would have had to change the rooster comb to make everything correct?

Thanks for all the info, guys.
The problem is that I have to jiggle the gear shift while in reverse to find the "sweet" spot that illuminates the BUL's. I've already replaced the NSS twice, so this is about the only thing left. I found out this morning that the part is called a "detent lever" and you can buy a "neutral safety switch detent insulator" kit to replace the insulator. This is about the only thing left, other than a bent or out-of-alignment lever, itself. One other thing that has crossed my mind is maybe the NSS is too long,or installed too tight in the socket. I have temporarily wired a 12v micro-buzzer in the reverse light circuit so I can tell when the BUL's are on. Not really a big thing to me, but the people at the state inspection office would think differently. LOL

Having to jiggle the linkage might be because one of the plastic bushings in the linkage is worn or has fallen out, lay under the car while somebody manipulates the linkage and look for lost motion in the linkage.

Also, it's not uncommon for the shaft in the "detent lever" to come loose and result in lost motion; check for this by disconnecting the linkage from the shift lever and operating the lever by hand...there should be no lost motion between the clicks.
