I've picked up another '72 Satellite Project car from a fellow Moparts member. My other Satellite project is on hold because this car is so much more solid and my goal is to have it a decent driver in less than 2 years. Hopefully I will be able to do most of the work myself, and I plan on building it the way that suits my tastes, not worrying about numbers or originality. It will not be another Road Runner clone, although it my look alot like one when I'm done. I'm perfectly OK with an air grabber hood, a rear wing and a Satellite name tag. This car will be a slow project as I will be lucky to spend 10-20 hours a week on it.

It's a 318 ,auto, A/C car, factory color is Doeskin Poly( first time hearing of that one).
It's a very solid car with alot less rust than my other Satellite. bounus#1!
There's some along the window to quarter panel seams, some in the trunk floor( which I plan on saving) , but next to nothing on the 1/4s, doors fenders and rockers.Since it's an AC car, it already has the 26" rad opening...Bonus#2!
Here's what I started out with( thanks to the prev owner's pics).

Mark

The bad side...hoping to save the door, but if the stud welder/puller won't cut it...I'll replace it. The quarter should be savable.

Just a few min playing with the door (before purchasing a stud welder/puller). To see if I can do anything with it.

Getting ready to pull drive train, pop out front windshield, and dash, then into the blasting tent!Just doing the engine bay, trunk area, and some floor pan areas, also some other underside stuff. Thankfully I don't have a rotisserie, or it'd never get done!

FINALLY!!! Been waiting for this...

You know, i was a bit worried about what that was going to look like... I'm usually pretty good at guessing whats hiding. Thats not bad at all. Good fix too.

I was thinking about that door though. If you cant fix it, as in get all the creased points/gouge out, why not just re-skin the bad part? The rest ov the door is going to be as rock-solid as the car is, and is original. If that was me and my Challenger i'd just re-skin the unfixable part with another original Challenger door skin. That could save a bunch ov filler if you do keep the door.

Good job on keeping that trunk floor too. Everyone is always so quick to replace savable ORIGINAL metal with cheaper aftermarket tin.

I'm learning how to use a shrinking disc so I can make metal repairs with very little filler...I'ts a work in progress...Here's a shot of a bit of wire wheeling the trunk floor...very few pinholes, but I don't think I'm into replacing the floor this go around.

Thanks Ron, PM me if you have any 71/72 parts left.

Here's the shrinking discs...a 5" and a 9". Trick is to Hammer/dolly metal, then heat up the high spots with the shrinking disc, and cool rapidly with mist of water and the heated metal is supposed to shrink back down to the level of the surrounding metal. So it's a slow process, but experts say with patience, there should be a need for very little filler. ...We'll see...

Oh, I forgot to mention, I plan on going with some kind of stout big block, possibly a 400 or 440( I have one of each to use if I go that route).Or a stroker of some kind. I'd like to retain the A/C...if it's not too much of a pain. I'd like it to be a menacing street machine, that I can take on the highway for cruises up and down the Island. The plan right now is a high impact Mopar color,or possibly triple black if the bodywork turns out good.I already have the complete black (bucket seats) interior and new black vinyl top purchased, along with re-chromed front/rear bumpers.Wheels will probably be old school mags, or...??? That's a long way off!

Here's my first Road Runner from 1981....love this look...I know, I'm lost in a time warp!

Taking the front bumper and grill off,and it's looking like no evidence of previous accidents or damage on the front.I don't think it's ever been apart on this end, original paint, parts etc...nice to see.

After removing the front lower valance( which has it 's share of dings) I noticed some markings that a few of the restores may find interesting or can explain. At this point it doesn't mean a lot to me, but maybe someone can shed some light....
notice the small white "X" on the bottom middle?

I'll keep that in mind, as I don't plan on putting the front to back side trim back on.There is no lower rocker moldings and I'll likely keep the emblems.

Ok, it's time to get serious....took out the motor tonight, and after everything under the hood is stripped off...then to blast the engine compartment! Man there's tons of air conditioning junk on here!

Just Verified, the matching numbers powerhouse 318!! May mean something down the road, but I plan on a big block baby! I'll tuck the original motor away.

I plan to try one of the shrinking discs too. Check out this site. Lots of good tips and tricks. http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/index.php

I thought I recognized the disc. My son 180ed his Dakota into a ditch and crumpled the PS bed corner. I plan to hone my skills on his truck. I'm very impressed with the skill level on that site. I've posted a few questions and they seem willing to help a newb out. Cool beans.

Got a chance to try my new toy...a stud welder...got the hang of sticking the studs on... practicing on a minor dent on the 1/4 panel. Works pretty good, but it'll take some more skill on the deeper dents. I like it, tho!

One of the best body tools I own. Play around on a junk fender and you will be amazed at how well they work.

So I thought I'd pull the steering column, since it would be easier to access the brake booster bolts under the dash....

And it was, booster came out easily, and pulled off the hood hinges to, and found a super-solid hinge mount area....these are usually rusted on these cars( at least my other cars were.)

And then, i figured I'd pull the glass to look at the window channels...they are awesome, also...just a speck of surface rust, nothing serious( all my other cars were rusted here, too!)

Does anyone know what the differences are between the standard dash frame and the rally dash frame? I have one of each, but don't want to swap VINs too badly, and I'd much rather have the rally dash in this car...

I'm pretty sure the frames are the same it's the rallye and standard clusters that differ. Nice work.

I like that idea, Scott...I'll try to find a used Big Block, (hopefully a stroker) that's a beast...don't worry about competition...don't think mine will get up to the same category as yours.

That would be nice if the frames are the same, especially re-using the original to the car as it has all the air cond crap.
Thanks for the kind words, I hope I can stik with it,as the project gets bigger daily!

My over-sized sandblasting cabinet is a 10X20 Costco tent...hokey, I know, but it helps keep the mess to a minimum, and I can work in the heated garage.

Well ok, if it will make you feel better...I found a couple of holes....likely the culprit for the rust on the driver's side floor pan, no doubt from years of wet leaves/debris sitting in there. Gotta get that area patched, so my feet don't get wet!

Ya, I was just thinking it's too far gone, not salvageable...looking for a cliff to push it over....( LOL J/K!)But seriously, I snapped out of it, and realized it's a heck of allot better than my other 2 projects, and less rust than most other resto projects out there. Very nice place to start, and I could care less that it's a Satellite and not a Road Runner,it's my favorite Mopar body style, and that's all that matters.

Thanks, 440;
I was afraid of that, as the wiring harness I want to use is non-rally with A/C. My rally harness does not have A/C...Once I get to that stage, I'll have to weigh my options.

Perfect, that shouldn't be too bad, then. Thanks for that, I haven't had one apart enough to know that.

Looks decent: We're going to blast the kid's bumpers, headers and propane tanks for his shorty today too, I'm already feeling the sand down my back.

Using the following blasting equipment: homemade pressure blaster, confined space blower, uses 12" accordion style vent tube, and finally, a fresh air breathing unit...it's such a dirty messy job...but at least I'm doing it at home and not having to pay someone else to do it.

I was searching for photos of brackets used to mount a 71-72 Plymouth B Body to a rotisserie, but didn't see any I liked. The rotisserie manufacturer suggest using the single bolt hole mounts....and it made me queezy, so I came up with these front mounts that use the front bumper bracket bolt holes.( the factory single hole mount brackets slide through the brackets I made out of 3" angle iron and 2 1/2" square tubing. Due to to offset of the bumper bolt holes, I needed to weld a piece of 1/4" flat bar to the angle iron.) They are very stable, and with the set bolts, I can slide the brackets to get the front rotisserie assembly as close as I want it. [image]http://[/image] [image]http://[/image]

Then for the rear I fabbed up some stout brackets that mount to the rear spring mount. Even though its only mounted with one bolt, I added some 2"x 1/4" square tubing between the frame and bracket to prevent pivoting. [image]http://[/image] [image]http://[/image]
