There is a very heavy almost U shaped piece of steel bolted in the rear of the drive tunnel on my '71 Charger. Is it's purpose to protect the interior in case a U joint goes? Is there a lighter alternative?

Thanks

I believe you are talking about the vibration damper.

The weight of the damper resists movement and dampens vibrations in that area. It can be removed but you may notice more noise or vibrations.

It was cheaper than redesigning the body panels after the problem was found in the early/pilot cars.

The vibration damper is covered in a TSB on-line at Hamtramck Historical
First one under Section 23 - Body.
