Howdy , I have a 505 to put in the 67 Barracuda street machine. Thinking ahead. What are the best sounding mufflers you have ever heard on a BB MOPAR ?? I've heard it will sound better without a crossover pipe. Thanks, TKF

I have Flowmaster 40s on mine, I get compliments all the time. But the absolute baddest ass sounding Big Block Mopar I ever heard was Brian Hicks 470" KOS B1 motor he ran in the mid 90s. And it had Borla XR1s. That thing gave me goose bumps....

Mopar to the bone!!!

Howdy , sounds like thats a drag car. I just want to run this one on the street. The 505 I have dynos at over 800hp 665 torque 14.6 compression. I've had it sitting here for several years,, now plans have changed and I'am going to turn it into a pump gas engine. The cam is pretty big 816 lift, ground to change the fireing order. I'll probly have big trouble?? I'll look into the mufflers you suggested. Thanks, TKH

Howdy, thanks for the reply. I'am rather isolated here in the Ozarks, I'am the last house on this road for six miles and it's twenty miles to the nearest town. It's a poor area. No mopar cars here, only Dodge pick ups. It's cattle country. I don't get to here any Great sounding mufflers here. Thanks for the suggestion. TKF

8500 rpm burnouts and purging his nitrous with the gas pedal probably contributed. You asked for best sounding, and buddy that one sounded alien........

2 1/2 dynomax bullets. The shortest ones they make. It's just a stock bore 413 with a thumper cam. All i have is the small idle clip till the spring comes. The neighbors know when i'm coming from two blocks over.

It's NOT Flowmaster, that's for sure

I have the Dynomax Bullet drag mufflers on my Duster and I'm in love with the tone that they have. They are deep and thunderous at idle and they sound like open headers when you get on it!

"Best sounding" is in the ear of the beholder. To me, the best sounding muffler is the origional factory Hemi muffler...if "loud" is what you want, go with the above mentioned.

Exactly. I think a bit of it also has to do with where and when we got interested in cars and the sound a person associates with a performance engine.

I've got a set of repop Hemi mufflers on my 57 Plymouth and every time I fire it up the sound takes me back to when I was working in a Chrysler Plymouth dealership in 68-70. Besides the Road Runners and GTXs we got in they were also on the State Cop cars. Of course they usually didn’t on the Road Runners and GTXs too long .....they were usually quickly replaced with a set of glasspacks (my second favorite...especially if I want loud) or Turbo mufflers ......by the way you are probably an “old guy” if you remember the original application for the Turbo Mufflers was the Corvair.

Yeah, the only reason they're called Turbo mufflers is that they were stock on a turbocharged Corvair. After they were discovered in the '70s, they were known for years as "Corvair turbocharger mufflers." Configuration was 2 1/2" in and out, short body. I had a pair on my 1968 chevelle which I built in 1975. I also put one on a Mercedes 280 sedan which I still have.
You'd go to the parts store and order them out of the Walker catalog. It was later that they began to be calles "turbo" mufflers. I guess saying Corvair turbocharger got too difficult.
About the same time the Chrysler Hemi mufflers were also discovered. They were flatter and longer. No one ever called the Hemi mufflers "turbo".
Now, everyone makes a turbo or Hemi style muffler, and the Hemis are called Hemi Turbo or some such.

For the best sounding mufflers I choose the Dynomax 17748 or 17749 which are an almost exact replica of a Hemi muffler. They have that low authoritative growl and a characteristic Chrysler sound as you go through the gears. I understand that Dynomax is now producing a 3" Hemi type muffler but I haven't seen or used one.

If you do go with the Dynomaxes be aware that they sound pretty quiet at first, got to put some miles on them. I got my pair for cheap because they didn't souund "right" in the first five miles so they got cut off.

R.
