I saw the thread in WIW about NOS and reproduction declas and want to get a concensus from the mob.

I have NOS wing and quarter decals and an early ninties repop nose set.
Im pretty sure Im going to at least attempt the NOS pieces but any thoughts on the OLD new nose decals?

Id really like some Moparts opinions.

OK--here's my take. Vinyl and adhesives do have a shelf life. it is POSSIBLE that there could be problems related the aging of the stripes while they were stored. On the other hand they may perform fine.

I do not know of reproduction problems related to original appearance/cut/color etc that would make them poor choices for a resto but maybe thats the case with some stripes.

Strikes me as taking a gamble for little/no benefit.

Just my opinion.

Having seen a pretty fair number of NOS decals I can tell you that there is USUALLY a way to tell one from the other, albiet, it's usually a very subtle difference. As mentioned condition varies depending on the environment they were stored in over the years, some are super nice and go on easy, some are folded up, dry, wrinkled garbage, but with patience even these can usually be used with decent results. Good news is that even if they go on poorly and need to be removed it's not all that tough to remove them and put something else on. I have an NOS set for my Duster and that's what i'm putting on it.

I agree with Scott, definitely use the NOS decals and the early repro if they appear to be in good condition. I have kept my NOS decals in my house, and they appear to be in "as new" condition. I recently used a NOS large bee decal (1971 Super Bee hood), and it applied perfectly.

BTW, has anyone seen the NOS 1970 Hockey Stick decals with "Hemi" upside down? I still have one set like that...

NOS decals used here without any problems. A friend of mine did most of the decal work for Aloha back when they were in full swing and he applied a ton of NOS decals and swore by them.

I bought a set of NOS "Feather Duster" decals for my 76, and they went on great !!! Best part was the fact that the paper they were on, were shaped/marked for placing the actual decal on the car in the correct spot ! Not sure if repops have that . . .

Cheers

Mark

Floyd, I wonder, was your car painted as it sits, or have you done some assembly of fenders, doors, etc., after the paint went on? Thanks.

I have the "AAR 'cuda" portion of AAR stripes. I don't know if those would be useful alone.

I assume you are talking about a Superbird. I bought NOS decals for my Superbird from Chrysler back in 1980 and finally got around to using them a few years ago. The Plymouth and nose black decals were stored inside all that time and rolled up in the original boxes, which may have been a mistake. The nose and wing Road Runner decals were in their original envelopes Be very careful with the Road Runner decals, I found they needed to be removed from the backing paper very carefully as there are several parts and the Road Runner and Superbird letters are easy to crack. The nose black decals were not a problem. The quarter panel Plymouth decals would not separate from the backing paper and I ended up taking them to a local sign shop who was able to digitally scan the decals and then cut new ones on a reflective adhesive that looks to me to be the same reflectivity and gloss as the originals. Mine are white. For the correct colors I would carefully use the Road Runner decals on the nose and wing, as for the nose black decals and the Plymouth quarter panel decals, worst case the aftermarket are probably close enough that nobody can tell the difference.

Good Luck.

Gary - You just made the list...

And, I'll have you know, I bolted the spoiler on earlier this year.

I'm a little late to this party but having handle many Superbird decals over the years....

My former B5 'bird had NOS wing decals that were put on in the mid 1980s and they did have some minor cracking. I assumed that the reflective letter's material was simply dried out.

Performance Car Graphics makes repro Superbird decals, if you need them.

FWIW, the "Plymouth" quarter decals were not reflectince originally.

lahatte - Sorry, the car was painted in sequence - the underside, floors, jambs and engine compartment first, then the entire exterior after fenders etc bolted on. At least that's how I remember it. It was a LONG time ago. That's why FY1TA is giving me a hard time. I think he has complted about 15 cars since I got mine back from the paint shop .

Thanks for that. I would prefer to have mine done with the fenders on if the paint shop can make it happen.
