Who here has owned a truly rare car back in the day and didn't realize
it. I once owned a real 1971 GTO Judge, numbers matching. It had
the 455 HO. I owned in 1981 when it was just a old muscle car
I find out years later that it was 1 of 357 built. Only if I knew
what I know now.

1971 Buick GS 455 1 of approx. 501 (501 has been lightly disputed over the years by Buick fans).

When I sold the car back in the early 90's buyers were all looking for Stage 1 GS's which actually had higher production numbers probably never realizing how rare this model was.

Ya, the rarest car I had was one of the very few 50 or 75? Canadian only 1971 340 Swinger Specials EV2 Auto, available from only two dealerships in Canada. It's available again...or was a few months back for 20,000,needing a complete resto....out of my league, now...

My '67 Mustang Fastback GT, 390 4-spd.

I've heard there wasn't a big bunch of them made.

Owned it from summer '69 until April '72.

I think the number you mean is 801? And I assume you mean the higher production numbers is for the '70?

Back when I had the car, I had a book on Buick GS's that proclaimed 501 or that's what stands out in my mind as I'm typing this, but that's been 20 years ago now so perhaps 801. Buyers would come and look at it and leave once they saw it was not a Stage 1 car.

On a side note...had opportunity to buy a Stage 1 engine still in the crate back in mid 80's in Lawton Oklahoma. There were 2 or 3 engines on hand for $1,000 a pop. Wonder what they'd go for today?

Just looked at GS Club of America site and they are showing 1,378 produced for 1971, so that number has morphed over the years. As stated, the numbers were contested back 20 years ago...still a low production car. Let's chuck it up to a "Senior Moment" Or a Fonzie used to say..."I was wrrrrrrr" "I was wrrrrrrr"

Rarest car... probably the '06 BMW M3 ZCP Competition Package car in Intergalagos Blue my wife drives on sunny days currently. No production #s out of BMW, but it is rare for sure. This is the American sister car to the uber rare European only CSL. We've added all the carbon fiber CSL goodies, but we don't have the super cool air intake assembly $$$$$ exclusive to the CSL cars. This car happens to be the funnest car to drive that I currently own. You can't beat the engineering of a German sports car IMHO.

Or the '05 Acura TL Aspec 6 Speed she drives on the other days. only 5% were 6 speeds, far fewer were Aspec package cars... probably something like 1-2% of all '05s. It has a "sport" VIN (1 yr only) which means it is a pre-"Type S" and we got stiffed the larger motor by buying a few months too early before the '06 Type S cars existed. Still got the big Brembos up front and tougher suspension.

Oh... you meant rare INTERESTING muscle cars? None. '70 Super Bee 383 4 speed bench seat post car is as rare as I've had in that department (still own). 1 of 1736 or something like that. Color is FE5 Red with a black C stripe. Not super rare/desirable, but uncommon and attractively equipped, and that's what I like in my women and my cars.

Back around the early 1980's, a friend of mine had 70 or 71 Challenger with a /6 auto. It was a pale yellow color. He scrapped it out because the floors were gone. Wonder how rare that was?

the rarest car i ever owned was a 74 anniversary trans am 455sd 4 speed with T tops.
i have read that only 6 cars were made. the T tops leaked so bad they removed the cars from the assembly line and welded up the roofs where they were.
car was rusted up to the door handles. the floors were sheet metal pop riveted in. i traded to someone who knew what it was. i only paid $200 for it. drove it for 2 weeks. and traded it even up for a 78 little red express with a blown motor with 60k miles. this was the summer of 1980.

Bill, my mistake - I thought you were talking about a '71 Stage 1. Yes, the number of 1971 455s has been adjusted over the years. I have the proper number somewhere based on research from the Sloan Museum.

1967 Mustang 390 fastbacks are not rare at all, by the way.

I sold my 69 1/2 A12 4 speed,Superbee in 1994 for $8800.00 That seemed like good money for the car at the time. They exploded in value a few years later. Who knew? Atleast I sold it to buy a 69 Charger 500,which I later traded for the 70 V code Charger R/T I have now. All three are very rare cars.

Around 1981 and into Camaros as a 16 yr old....talked Pop into buying a decent shape 67 Camaro Convertible 396/4 speed console/gauges car...

Was white with white top, blue interior....ralley sport option with hidaway lights........the seller was telling us that this was a pace car edition, which I had never heard of before so I thought he was kidding me.....it had been repainted white before so there were no emblems on it.......he showed us some documents which were in the trunk, where flags had been attached to the bumper and an extra set of door decals which had decayed away in the trunk before anybody put them on.

this all meant little to me...we bought it and my buddy and i would take it out when my parents were gone and beat on it...laying rubber everywhere.....bought for 2500.......dad sold it after i left for college in '84 for 4500.....a few years later we found out it was an original parade car, something of like 80 or so built for race day...

reminds me of 1986 when my friend was begging me to buy his 69 pace car vert, 350/auto, for $3800.....i hated the orange interior...go figure...

1) no 1974 Trans Ams were built with T-tops
2) 1974 wasn't an anniversary year for anything
3) the only anniversary trans am that came with a 455 was the 1976 model and it sure wasn't a super duty by then - garden variety low-po 455

was your car black and gold? if so it was a '76

My 1970 442 W30; purchased it in 1985 for $7500.00 and sold it in 1989 for just a little more. 1 of 1542 1970 W30 HT autos and it had some desireable options; rallye pac, hurst dual gate, 3.91's, SS1's etc.

....but I knew exactly what it was....unfortunately a house for my new family came first.

Yeah, I always look and they're always NOT

No, I think they had a black 6 speed on the radar at the dealership where we "ordered" ours, but we wanted a grey one and we had to wait... they then dealer traded for it if I remember correctly. Looking back, I don't know why we wanted grey so bad.... such a common boring color now that all the TLs are running around out there in that color.

I wish I could paint it flat black...wife would never roll with that....she always wants to ruin my fun....

That info is good to know, thanks.

1 web page I found yesterday said 17,000 plus for the '67 Luxury fastback. Didn't say how many were 390s or 4-spds. Mine was the 'Luxury Fastback', not the regular 'fastback'. "Luxury 17,391", "Fastback 53,651".

Yes, I read that, then looked up the web page I saw yesterday, and edited my post with info, so mine was 1 of 29 according to your post/info. Thanks.

Mine was a GT, also had the 8-track radio [1 of 2] standard steering.

You're reading the Marti wrong. It's like this:

x like this.
Of those, x had this.
Of those, x had this.
Of those, x had this.

So, the 2 8-track cars were 390 fastback 4-speed cars with GT package and that particular interior/exterior combo. Yours most certainly was not like that.

It had the luxury package so maybe it was. But no ac, so maybe not.

My '67 Mustang Fastback GT, 390 4-spd.

I've heard there wasn't a big bunch of them made.

Owned it from summer '69 until April '72.

I had one Highland Green with a 289 and a 4-speed. That was back in the mid 70s when they were just aging cars with little value. I can image if I had dropped a 390 into it and turned it into a Bullit clone.

Why a Buick GS... So roll the clocks back to 1978. Was working in a carwash in suburbs of Philly when a kid from school came through with his brother's 1970 Stage 2 GS. It's hard to even fathom today the thoughts of this car being put through a brush type conveyored car wash..gasp.
When he left he proceeded to light em up in what was at the time probably the longest posi-track rolling burnout I'd ever seen. At 15 years of age this left a lasting impression. Now roll the clocks to 1982 and I'm at first duty assignment at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma. Was riding past a new car lot with a buddy and at a glance saw what I thought was a Buick Skylark on the lot. Pulled in the lot and low and behold it's a 71 GS 455 and BAM, I'd just bought my first muscle car. Had the GS from 82 to 92 when I sold it while stationed in Montana. Wonder today if the car is still alive and well? Cool part at Altus was the original owner was there and I'd spoken with him a couple of times. He said they'd take the car to Az and Nv on road trips and have the speedo pegged out cruising at 120 mph on the highways of Mexico back in the 70's. Pretty cool; had me laughing hearing that from the ol man. His son also a car buff had a beautiful 1970 GTO Judge convertible (gold in color). It was at local car shows I'd gotten to know the original owner and his son....man that was long ago. This GS, like the Stage 2 would burn rubber for a block long if you kept your foot in it and it stayed straight. A blast to drive and an incredibly comfortable car to drive. Definitely miss it...

Had minor rust repairs under the vynal top; fixed that and replaced the vynal...removed in the pict. Pict probably 1983ish Altus Oklahoma.

Curious if any board members know of Rosevelt Oklahoma and Hinton's Salvage (Parts World). Back in the early 80's this was a haven for finding plenty of mopar parts and cars if you frequented the lot cause parts went fast there to people who were scarfing them up (must have been psychic).

Forgot about the GS. Had a '68 Buick GS 400. Not too remarkable until you throw in the power convertible top, the power driver's seat, the AM/FM radio, clock, cruise control, A/C, power windows, tilt column and the vacuum trunk release. Factory road wheels and a hood tach, along with added Lucas Square 8 driving lights - ahhh, the good days.

Owned, and got away...

1970 Cuda V-code Six-Pack, 4 sp, Dana, Lime on black, Fog Light car. Had to sell it (for $5000) to help out a family member financially.

Never owned, and got away...

1969 GTO Judge Convertible, bench seat, 400, 4 sp car!!! Had a 455 at the time because the number matching engine had a cracked cylinder, but was included in the sale. Didn't have the $3500 about 25 years ago...oh, well....

Was looking for a Cuda, wanted one badly. A shipmate had one he wanted to sell but I passed on it - was too worried about having to buy tires too often. 70 Cuda 440 6 pak, 4 speed and triple black for 1500.00. That was 79, of course if I'd bought it I may not have lived through learning to drive it. That's my major consolation. Finally found a 340 4 speed car, still got that one, but it's been in pieces for a long long time now. (See sig pic for as/when purchased appearance.)

I'm glad someone pointed out that there were no Stage2 cars out the showroom floor. A lot of people still get that wrong. Attached is a picture of my 71 Stage 1.

The car I'm sorry that got away was a 71 440-6, auto, w/410 Dana Road Runner. I actually sent it to the junk yard with a 440 and auto between the fenders. The engine wasn't the original but I never even checked the trans. #'s. Dark green w/green interior. Back in 1983 it was just a beat up old car that needed everything so I took what I wanted and sent it to the crusher.

A highly respected collector (nowadays) that was just starting out back then told me I should have kept the tags so a nice car could have been made from them!!! Ron

I hear what you are saying and can respect anyone's doubt given the rareity. There was no mistaking it...the car had been upgraded to the Stage 2 Option (heads, etc. came in the trunk). That's my story and I'm stickin to it!!! LOL. This particular family had a stable of muscle cars which was a bit of an oddity in those days.

The one that got away???
71 Hemi 4spd cuda, sublime with black interior, billboards etc. Fully optioned, IE: power windows, 8 track with dictaphone, Fog lamps 49,000 ONE owner miles or so, Full doc's
Time frame 1982. They couldn't give it away at 5995.00, 4995.00

I had just bought an overpriced house in San Jose at 106K and didn't have two pennies to rub together. Not too mention it seemed like a heavy, overweight, over optioned, low performing pig at the time
I think they finally sold it for about 4,000 or a bit less. I should mention it was a bay area car all it's life, HMMM NO RUST, SALT etc!!!
I still look for it and wonder where it wound up

Upgraded using over the counter Stage II components; sure......but there still is NO SUCH THING as a FACTORY Buick GS Stage II car. Sorry to pick nits, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

I will, of course, be happy to admit the error of my ways if anyone can provide a window sticker or build sheet showing I'm wrong (I won't hold my breath, though)

To nit pick back at ya, no where in the post did I say or imply it was a FACTORY Stage 2. Simply said it was a 70 Stage 2. Sorry Dave, I'm messing with ya as you are obviously very passionate about these cars which is a good thing. I remain confident the car had the Stage 2 components installed regardless of how it got that way, that's all. Merry Christmas!

71 GTX 440+6 4 speed air N96 car, I knew it was 1 of 65 (I think). Bought it out of Iowa in 1986, sold it to a guy from Georgia in the early 90s, didn't have the money to restoreit. Complete car, very good condition with NOM block, everything else was there. Miss it, great highway car.

Dave

To nit pick back at ya, no where in the post did I say or imply it was a FACTORY Stage 2. Simply said it was a 70 Stage 2. Sorry Dave, I'm messing with ya as you are obviously very passionate about these cars which is a good thing. I remain confident the car had the Stage 2 components installed regardless of how it got that way, that's all. Merry Christmas!

fair enough. I was curious as to whether or not the car was a Stage I car. Basically it is either a GS with Stage II components or a Stage I with Stage II components.....either way calling it a '70 Stage II is a bit misleading and I just wanted to point out to those that don't know that they never made one.

anyhow, just having fun and it's all good.

Merry Christmas,

Dave

Tell ya what, I sure miss my 71 GS 455. That car had such a smooth ride and globs of power. Threw in a 3K stall converter, Hooker headers, and a blue printed KB Stage 1 cam, aluminum intake and ohhhhhh my!!! Car also had the dual exhaust outlets through the bumper which was nice feature on that big honking rear bumper.

Another favorite was the Bader vs. Dudek shootout... The firestorm that article stirred in 1984 still carries to this day and the article ran back when I had the GS so I'd lay the Mucsle Car Review magazine in the back seat at car shows...always drew good conversation. The GS is gone, but still have the magazine and the tag which hangs on the wall of the garage

I know how you feel; all I have left of my W30 is some pictures on the wall and the licence plate holder. I miss that car, but I love my 'Bee too.
