U-joint life? I am guessing that I might wind-up with a DS that is about 12" long if I go with a long-shaft 727(because I want to maintain FULL-AUTO shifting). With a decent set of SS-type springs ...and longer shocks ... will I be in the danger-zone of spitting-out DS's(because of radial U-joint angles) ? ORE ...am I going to have to go with a aftermarket shortie kit on the trans ?

Most likely its going to put the U-joint in bind being that short of DS and SS springs... you would be way better off with a 4 link in that set up

I don't think my chassis-guy wants to build all that. He IS going to "build" the rear frame extensions ....
So what would be the cost on the bars, heims and shocks etc ?
Go look at http://www.swracecars.com/ and see what you want

OK ...I will that ... but I am just looking for a ball-park at this point. How much LESS axle movement is there in a 4link vs leaf-spring ...in order to be effective?

Go look ... they offer cheaper and higher price... the thing with a 4 link you can control how much movement you want... if you go over or under the anti squat line

Doc, I would call Mark Williams or another driveshaft company to see what their take on a short driveshaft is before going forward. A four link will definately keep the u joints closer to the proper angles, provided you keep the I C long. My worry is the angle of the driveshaft that could result from suspension travel. The other thing that comes to mind is if you have a lot of suspesion movement, you also will have a lot of travel at the trans yoke. Possible bind?
