I have a 94 grand caravan and the trans has decided to not shift anymore. It is the 4 speed automatic behind a 3.0L. It feels like it is starting out in second and stays there. No up shifts or down shifts. It recently had the passenger side half shaft replaced. Trans fluid level is good. Where do I start to diagnose this issue?

Those early auto trannies can be a horror show. LOOK in some of the CL posts .... LOTS of them are there "trans NR".

Chrysler didn't get the prob sorted out uNtil the late 02 model year.

sounds like it is in the "limp" mode and may be a module or electronic issue. My '91 would do this and sometimes just disconnecting the battery would get it to (??) reset or something Have it scanned like suggested. (btw it too felt like it was in 2nd gear and would stay there and never shift just like you described......the "limp mode"

This is what I was thinking. When our 2000 did this it was just the speed sensor. There is a high and low speed snsor that tells it to shift. Replaced both and no problems since. 4 years gone by now.

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.

Speed sensor sounds like this may be the cause.....and not that this would be an issue or a way of it going into the limp mode by the OP but I could get it to go into the limp mode by spinning the (front) wheels in slippery conditions like SNOW when I first started the car and the trans hadn't shifted yet. If it stayed in 2nd gear/limp mode then I'd have to shut the engine off and reset it, not spin the wheels until it shifted on its own.

Thanks for all the replies. I will try to reset it and then get it to a garage to run a scan. I sure hope it is speed sensors. I need to get a few more thousand miles out of it, I just put on some new tires which doubled the value of the van.

Thanks for the help.

Where are the transmission speed sensors located on this 94 FWD Grand Caravan 4 speed automatic sitting beside a 3.0L. I took a look and I saw a few items that could be the sensors but I am not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

95% of the time the input sensor is the problem, replace it with a OEM sensor, they are/were around $20 dealer cost, takes about ten minutes to change. You would be surprised how many transmission rebuilds were done/sold by shady transmission shops and dealers because of a $20 part..

Wild_RT the picture you provided was spot on, thank you. I guess my web search skills need some improvement.

62maxwgn my plan was to replace both sensors but do the output sensor first since my speedodmeter was still working.

Thanks to all.

When looking for a picture rather than text I change to the images tag on Google... It makes finding a useful picture much easier..

Glad I could help...

Also make certain your battery is good.

The 604 in my 96 sebring acted up alot and would go into limp mode on occasion. Even though the charging system was up to snuff, the battery would start he car...most of the time.

Changed the battery, shifting problems went away.

I used to care but....... things have changed

Well, replaced both speed sensors and still no luck. I am going to inspect the wires on the input speed sensor a little closer tomorrow. I am hoping to find a broken wire by the sensor.

There never was a check engine light but I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a good 15 minutes. It only shifts one time and then stays in second. What a bummer.

Get it to a TRANSMISSION shop and have them scan it, including a CVT (clutch volume test). They can shift fine but if the computer sees that it takes too much fluid to apply the clutches it assumes clutch wear and goes into limp in mode. Most regular scanners or code readers don't read this.

Well, then off to find a scanner. I didn't have it scanned yet. I will this week if no broken wires are found today.
