Could a 1971 440/6 block have a casting date of 7/69 ???? All the ones I have ever seen were cast in mid to late 1970. Has anyone ever seen this ??

Sure could, Chrysler did not have very good stock control in place.

That said I would be looking very closely at the pads that have the numbers stamped on them and the font of the numbers themselves ...

I would expect to find a E stamped on the top pad if it was a made in 69 mtr or would mopar just stamp a G on top of the E and put the mtor in a 71 car ?? I have been told ALL hemi blocks used in 71 cars were cast in 69 and have a 69 casting date on the side but I never knew a 71 car could have a cast in 69 B or RB block. Im trying to get a pic of the vin stamping.

Mine was a "warranty" block with NO VIN stamping. Block was originally in a 1970 6bbl 'Cuda that evidently had the motor replaced long ago"?" I purchased the short block from a friend as he had found an "F" 1970 block that he felt was more "correct" . I put this in my 1970 Challenger R/T Sixpack because it had the correct rods , balancer.......

Your block was cast in '69, but machined and assembled during the '71 MY, to be used in a '71 vehicle.

What he said.

Just because a block was cast does not mean it gets machined and assembled right after. That block could have been hanging around for any number of reasons.

......So you have a warrenty motor that has a G 440 stamped on the top pad and a cast date 69 on the side of the block and no vin. This car is a 71 sixpack mtr with a vin ,a G 440 stamped on the top pad but a 7/69 casting date on the block. Has anyone ever see this ?

A warranty engine would not be stamped with the MODEL year.

I'm not buying the WARRANTY claim of the engine above.

Yeah, I was wonderin about that. Thought the top pad would have been blank or had a W stamped there. So anyone else have a real production 1971 sixpack num matching engin with a G 440 on the top pad and a 1969 casting date on the block ???

John,
Would a block stamped with an F or G, but NO VIN stamped be an over the counter parts department block or one the factory worker forgot to stamp? TIA

Are you not going to believe it is possible unless one person has one ?

I have seen a 340 with a mid 70 casting date and a 1973 VIN stamped on it.

Over the counter would be stamped S in the model year spot if it were an over the counter long block assembly, S being service replacement ... UNLESS a full engine got pulled for some odd reason.

Short blocks wouldn't get stamped ... I think ... but would have the riveted tag on the side saying what the short assembly build number was for reference.

It is also possible that an engine just didn't get stamped, the lunch or end of shift bell rang and the guy dropped what he was doing and off he went ?

My 71 sixpack Challenger has a casting 7/70 and spd feb 71. Thats within 7 months ....Ok The block in question is in a car for sale and that why we want to be shure. Sounds like a 69 block ina 71 car is not really that unusual... Thanks.

As I said above there are 2 possible reasons , I would look closely ... IN PERSON ... at the ID pad and VIN pad BEFORE laying out the cash ....
