What do you guys like to use as a build primer? I was using a PPG product, Im no body guy so I cant think of the part number. Well recently a guy at a hot rod shop who works on a lot of vettes told me to use Slick Sand by evercoat. Its a polyester based 2 part primer that sands very nicely. I have been using it on the Ramcharger and I really like it.

It gets pretty hard, and it fills minor waves, an small dings really nice. sands really nicely also.

Just curious what you guys use.

Back in the 70's when I was doing lots of corvette/flatbottom painting, Evercoat made a product called feather fill. It was the first 2-part primer I ever used. Spraying lot's of lacquer back then and never had a lift or shrinkage problem. This was back in the days when we still used red cap. Feather fill was definitely high build compared to anything else at the time and at the time, is was the best stuff I'd ever used. Anymore, I would think the high build ppg/dupont stuff would be pretty similar.

Featherfill G2 is what I use. Evercoat makes it in few colors, I use grey for lighter color cars and black for dark,I also mix them to get closer match, black seems to sand easier due to higher zinc content,but any of them provide great results.Buff color seems to dry too fast though if you are trying to shoot the whole car. Before the G2 I was using Featherfill until they came out with G2. You can never go wrong with any Evercoat product.I wouldn't use anything else especially at $50 a gal.However, do not apply it directly to metal.

All the bare metal is being covered with a wash coating first.

Not good enough imo, you need something more substantial that will block moisture,something like epoxy primer.

Talked to a painter last night about this, specifically about soft sand.
His experience is that it is no better than the primer he likes when sanding, and he's had a couple minor issues with the softsand primer.
It's also 3 times the cost.
He's going to stick with the stuff he's using due to no issues, the cost is just gravy!
Again, any product will have cheers and jeers, this is just his experience. Yours may vary, depending on too many things to list.

I have a body shop in NC we do lots of custom work and have used it all threw the years but I love nason 421-17 primer and have had lots of years with it and no problems, I have tried slick sand and like it but be sure to epoxy any bare spots I had some that would not dry one time and it was over bare steel anouther shop in the area had the same problem and never found out why.I was scared of all that film build here in NC because its so hot in the summer and very cold in the winter thought it may cause problems over the years.

Yep, this stuff does not stick to bare metal,you must use epoxy or etch primer to avoid adhesion problems.As for not drying that one time, you must have overshot some MEKP . I know this because one time I needed to shoot a spot of this primer and wanted it to dry quick, so I squirted a lot more of the hardener than what they recommend,it wouldn't dry ,even with infared light.So after an hour under the light,I scraped it off,mixed a new batch from same container with proper amount of MEKP and what do you know? I was dry within an hour without infared light.

Gotcha. It is good primer,just don't overdo the hardener or use it over bare metal.

Currently I'm liking the Mar-Hyde (now 3M) Ultimate 2K primer. It fills well and sands like butter...not too expensive either. Seems to hold out and not shrink hardly at all. I did recently use some of the Clausen All-U-Need, which is pretty much spray bondo, and it really fills well but sands like garbage. It's fine for rough work, and I would never try to use it for a final finish product. Good for a first round of priming and block with 80 or 120 and that's about it. The Ultimate 2K will fill 80 grit scratches with 2 or 3 coats max.

Using Ditzler NCP 280 on my current project, sprays well, fills well, sands well & I'm told it has virtually no shrinkage... We'll see...

the shop i blast for uses CRE, its a heavy/fill type epoxy primer,,, sands pretty good with 180, and fills pitted areas very well. good for frames, and suspention parts etc,,
i used this for the first time on this 37 packard frame,, its nice

you can fill/spray up to 3-4 coats, (3:1:1) back to back, on heavily pitted areas, wait till it drys, sand 180, shoot base, chassis coat black,

or cut it with zylene (3:1:1.5)to matte the cre down, respray as final coat. Also lacquer will flatten it out, he told me.. i ve got pics somewhere.. i am really happy with results,,

the shop uses the slicksand also... i think spray up to 2mm-3mm? if i remember, then block, block..

I prefer the 2k direct to metal type primers and not having to do the extra steps if you cut through while blocking.

A friend of mine used Featherfill G2 on his 67 Camero and it started bubbling and the paint cracked in many different spots. They run a body shop it will not use it anymore. They use crossfire's new formula for high build now. I have a friend that uses and likes Omni a lot. I like Nason (beige), its pretty cheap and sands nice.
