Alkyld enamels, such as Rustoluem, two biggest faults are chalking due to UV light exposure (from the sun, etc.) and chemical resistance. Adding some hardener will increase the chemical resistance considerably. Parts underneath the car receive minimal UV light exposure, so Rustoleum with some hardener added should hold up well. This type of finish would be acceptable for a summer time week-end car.

Will any kind of hardener for enamel work?

Check around your area, in AZ powdercoating fees vary greatly. The guys I go to now are awesome and the $$ is great. They have a $30 minimum for any one color. I remember once I had 12 items, all smaller, leaf spring brackets front and rear, rear shock perch, leaf spring bumper (attached to frame), upper control arms . . . . and was only charged the min $30. I've decided its cheaper for that (all things considered) than for me to strip/blast, prime and paint.
That said others in the area charge in the neighborhood of 70% more

The last 2 k-frames I painted I used black farm implement paint on. It's extremely durable and even sticks to rust. Tractor Supply carries it if you have them in your area.

No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

I know I'm gonna get hit for this BUT-
I've used POR-15 semigloss black on a few K-frames and never had any issues. Still holding up fine on my 5th at the moment.
That being said-
IF OEM is no concern, and the K is out and ready- Powder Coating IS the only way to go.

Good luck with it!
CC.

Lew..FORTY DOLLARS??? What a deal! Hopfully,Bill at QC Coatings can give me a similiar price! Powder Coating seems like the way to go...if the price is NICE! Thank You ALL for your opinions..and experiences! I truly appreciate it! Randy B.

Randy I think that powder coating is only that cheap in Arizona , I've never been able to get something done that cheap here in the northeast .

Hmmmm;

I powdercoated mine, but despite all the rhetoric, ANYTHING you do is better than the thin coat of GLOSS black the factory used. It's nice to use the best product available, but for the useage of the average hobbiest, anything better than a spray bomb is overkill.....which is fine.

Thanks everyone! Because of time restraints,I think I'm going to check out the farm implement paint from Tractor Supply. My painter wants the car to him by the end of the month...next wednesday or thursday! My powder coater has a pretty long back-log right now, anyway! Thanks again! Randy B.

Randy, that implement paint(TSC) is some TOUGH stuff...
I painted my crawler loader(the yellow front loader
thats up north) with it about 20 years ago.... you
can brush it on OR thin it and spray it

Thanks for the info,Mike! Do you think a quart will be enough..if I brush it on? I will probably paint the steering components with it,as well!

Chassis black from Eastwood has proven to be a very durable paint out of a spray can for me.

BTW...just got an email that they have it on sale for black Friday.

How does the Eastwood paint compare to SEM Trim Black? Is the Trim Black close to the correct color or should there be more gloss? I've got some of the REM paint and I'm wondering if I should order some of the chassis black.

Eastwood lists Chassis Black(satin and gloss) AND Extreme Chassis Black (satin and gloss) What's the difference? Would a coat of Diamond clear over the Chassis Black be a good idea?

I went t the local Menards and bought a gallon can of Alykyd Enamel. Its a direct to metal paint.

I rolled it on with a foam roller, and touched up the small areas with foam pads.

Hard to tell it wasnt sprayed.

I have used this type of paint for many things, picinic tables (5 years outside and still going),
canoes, and most recently on forklifts in a meat plant, where the trucks are subjected to high temp high pressure sanitizer/water solutions. ITs the longest lasting stuff fo that application.

I used to care but....... things have changed
