I used the Krylon Epoxy paint on the 8 3/4 that I put in my 81 shorty 10 years ago.. came out real nice and still looks good today...

Alkyld enamels, such as Rustoluem, two biggest faults are chalking due to UV light exposure (from the sun, etc.) and chemical resistance. Adding some hardener will increase the chemical resistance considerably. Parts underneath the car receive minimal UV light exposure, so Rustoleum with some hardener added should hold up well. This type of finish would be acceptable for a summer time week-end car.
Obviously, a person could spend more money and use an epoxy primer and urethane paint or power coat chassis parts. These are superior coatings. I would seriously consider these finishes for vehicles driven on salt treated roads.
On a vehicle which is driven, any chassis paint or coating will be chipped and scratched over time. So a finish which can be easily repaired is usually a good idea for a frequently driven vehicle.

The last 2 k-frames I painted I used black farm implement paint on. It's extremely durable and even sticks to rust. Tractor Supply carries it if you have them in your area.
No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

Randy I think that powder coating is only that cheap in Arizona , I've never been able to get something done that cheap here in the northeast .

Hmmmm; I powdercoated mine, but despite all the rhetoric, ANYTHING you do is better than the thin coat of GLOSS black the factory used. It's nice to use the best product available, but for the useage of the average hobbiest, anything better than a spray bomb is overkill.....which is fine.  Dave

Randy, that implement paint(TSC) is some TOUGH stuff...
I painted my crawler loader(the yellow front loader
thats up north) with it about 20 years ago.... you
can brush it on OR thin it and spray it

I went t the local Menards and bought a gallon can of Alykyd Enamel. Its a direct to metal paint.
I rolled it on with a foam roller, and touched up the small areas with foam pads.
Hard to tell it wasnt sprayed.
I have used this type of paint for many things, picinic tables (5 years outside and still going),
canoes, and most recently on forklifts in a meat plant, where the trucks are subjected to high temp high pressure sanitizer/water solutions. ITs the longest lasting stuff fo that application.
I used to care but....... things have changed

In fact,I'm leaning toward painting the engine block BLACK! Orange 8 qt. oil pan..aluminum heads,and orange M-1 intake manifold. I will call my powder-coater for a price! Hopefully,it's reasonable..or I'll have to spray it myself! Thanks,guys!
