I have owned this car for 18 years ('71 Challenger). The dash pad was changed before I got the car. I"ve made several changes to the car. Planning to redo the dash and realized Vin tag is missing.

Do you have the build sheet? I understand that you CAN have a new VIN tag made, provided you have some good documentation. Try http://www.datatags.com/

Get the VIN number off your title and have a new one made.

For the VIN tag, go to your state and have a new one affixed. Anything else is illegal, no matter what others say.

Is it a title that you've already run thru your BMV or is it a skip-titled one that's been signed but not dated and laying 'dormant'?

Meaning - has a duplicate title already been run thru another state with the original VIN tag on another car???

If the fender tag and the other numbers on the car match the one on the title, get a repop tag made up. If things don't look legit, do the right thing and get the state issued replacement vin.

We are assuming you purchased this car from someone within your state. Typically, if you purchase a car from another state a police officer has to verify that the VIN matches the title and checks the car to see if it has/had been reported as stolen. There is a form he/she must fill out and sign before you can put the vehicle in your name and license it. Without a dash VIN this would not be possible.

So have you checked the body numbers to see if they match the last few digits of the VIN on your title? If those don't match you have a big problem.

And I wonder why the previous owner removed the dash VIN???????????

On a Florida State format was it one that looks like an original?? I suspect "a new vin tag to screw into the door jam" is not one like an original that rivets to the dash?

By Federal regs it should be visible through the "glazing" or windshield, why would they make it for the door jam......sorry not on topic so disregard that

Any way you cut it, if you want to be legal you have to get hold of your DMV and see what they have to say.

Nothing wrong with having a State issued VIN tag...with one you're not saying it's original. Build a Cobra kit car, stick a 427 in it put a State issued VIN on it and try to pass it off as an original....same deal and if someone does pay original money for it then

I have a shell of a '70 Challenger and it was going to be my son and my project and when it was finished it was going to have a State inspection and a STATE issued VIN and who cares.......now if someone is going to make an original VIN plate and without absolute, without a doubt, swear on a stack of bibles, checked out by law enforcement documentation and verification that it is and always was that car then have them make me and my son a '70 HEMI CHALLENGER VIN tag..no make that two VIN tags one number apart I'll find another shell but the best I can do for a motor is a 318 .........18 years, 4 posts and a screen name of Risky hmmmmmmmmmmmm let's do all we can to help him find someone to make him an original VIN tag

So why hasn't the Feds shut down Datatags? They have come and checked out his operation a couple times.

I guess it's not a common issue but the reason the Fed's changed the regulation so it was visible from the outside was so they could check cars park and without the owner there to open the car (door). They could check out a suspicious car parked on the street or check the VIN without the driver getting out and what law inforcement officer wants to put there life on the line by bending down to check a door VIN with the driver there or behind him or her???? Odd that they suggest it being put in the door jam where it can't be seen from the outside

If you have the title, and the cowl numbers are the same, contact www.datatags.com you may have a few hoops to jump thru to possibly obtaining a vin tag

DON"T post or PM your VIN on this forum or any other by those requesting it to "help" you
