Would you duplicate these markings???! I'm not. I may just put the clean 3 digit code in yellow but do not plan to duplicate the mistake. A photo documentation for my album will suffice.

Depends on how far you want to take your restoration.
It would be a good idea to take a few up-close macro shots of the markings and save them somewhere for future reference though. You may not need them but someone else might.

Plus documented mistakes are cool
I thought it would be interesting to some. I have it documented for the record. However, I can't replicate that mess. I decided to correct it the way it should look. I would do the same if I had a bad looking factory blackout job on a radiator support. I want the car to look good to the average non-paint daub oriented car person and look correct to the more discerning Mopar enthusiast. I can do that without making it look bad even if it came that way from the factory.

In a nutshell, restoring means returning to 'as original'.
If the original 'mistakes' & sloppy work are not restored, it would be called a custom.

Nobody said restoration is easy, consider it a challenge, take your time, and do it right. You've taken the first important step, you have pictures to back up the finished product and it makes for a good conversation piece. I also agree with the bare cast iron vs cast iron paint, use ECS RPM on it after you strip it to raw iron and it will look brand new new for a very long time.
