I haven't looked into the subject much lately and there a lot of possibilities on the market now.

I need to get my 71 Dusters door hunges in top shape before the body work gets started, which option makes the most sense these days and looks the most original when done? Reproduction hinges? Rebuilt hinges? Something else?

My vote is for re-built hinges. There are two very reputable and able bodied gentlemen in the great state of Wisconsin that can help. Resto-Rick and Rich Berlisk (formerly of Almost NOS)

The only problem with the AMD hinges is that the S spring is not notched like the original one. It will take time, openeing and closing the door, for it to make a groove on the S spring. I just replaced my lower hinge and found that out.

It seems to me that, if you want the original appearance, someone could weld the hinge pin holes closed a bit, then re-machine to the proper size hole. Grind off the excess weld on the surface. Voila. New factory hinges?

I did exactly that with my Roadrunner. Time consuming, but the results are great. I did use new pins from the Help section, since the pins were worn as well. The new welded areas are unlikely to wear, since weld is harder than CRS.

Did you check with SMS.

I just had Rod at SMS take care of my hinges as well as a few other items. I haven't bolted them back up (and won't for a long while) but the overall experience I had with SMS was positive.

Well, this is one of those areas where you have several options.

If you have the money and are of the mind
"Everything MUST be brand spanking new"
go spend it and buy new ones or ante up for NOS.

However, My personal opinion is (unless they are rusty/rusted out):
rebuild your originals.

Let's face it, this hobby is pricey enough replacing stuff that
HAS to be replaced...

It gets REALLY pricey when you start replacing that which
"Really doesn't need to be replaced"...

Obviously, If you want to replace them, me telling you otherwise
won't change your mind....

But IMHO:

Brand new pins, bushings, and the S spring on the lower hinge
are fairly cheap and the rebuild is easy to do.

Usually, you only really need to rebuild the driver side.
On 2 door cars, the passenger side is not really worn that bad.
it's just...old...

If you rebuild them yourself
There are 2 schools of thought

Disassemble, blast(clean), repaint, then reassemble

or

disassemble, blast(clean), re-assemble, then repaint..

The only difference is the appearance on the car.
If you want originality go with the latter...

Bottom line: This is a pretty easy DIY job:
Save your replacement money for other stuff that really needs replacing.

Best of luck to you and thanks for all your contributions to the hobby and this site!

You can rebuild your hinges without the extra bushing that was not there originally. RestoRick sells an oversize pin with reamer.

I like this option.

If you want to know how to remove the S spring and put it back, see photo. Clamp the S spring in a vise as shown, and twist the top of it with a crescent wrench. Slide the stamping downward to clear the S spring groove. Just be sure to take your own photos so you get it back together right.

Aren't there date codes on the hinges? Wouldn't you want to put the correct date coded units back onto your car?

I went with Resto-Rick and have nothing but great things to say. He'll send you everything you need and doing it yourself is far from rocket science. Save your money for something that matters.

Hey Scott,

If you would decide on rebuilt ones, there is a fella very very close to you that does a perfect pro job at lil guy prices.

res1vw21@gmail.com His name is Ross.

He also would mind explaining how he does them and what parts he uses if you wanted to do it yourself, but time vs labor in your world it might be easy to buy a set nos or rebuilt.

How stock do they have to look? I make full length pin sleeves that will fit inside the inner hinge and weld them in. That way it spreads the load of the pin the full length instead of just 3/16" on the ends. A grease zerk can be put midway. No more sagging doors....

I'm looking for 100% original appearance when done.

If you leave the grease fitting off you would have to look pretty close to notice the inner part of the hinge has a slighty larger diameter where the pin should be. I have them on one of my Hemi cars and even after 23 years not one show car judge has caught it.. I make my sleeves out of stainless.
But I know you do pretty rare customer cars and that's a lot different than doing your own car.

If you don't mind a little more extra work, you can always drill out the damaged holes and tig weld a short(1/4") stainless bushing in...

or go the easy way out and buy the repair kit sold at many parts stores.
