Loud hissing and I loose all power steering when turning left only. Turning right is not a problem. This is a '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7. Power steering pump is not low on fluid.

New to me, what could cause this???

Steering box.. Problem is in the control valve section...

Is replacing the steering box the only fix?

If your adventurous & can find a seal kit it might be worth taking a look... Probably a sticky valve or a damaged sealing ring...

I would look and see if the steering shock is bent.

Shouldn't be this (wife's daily driver) but I will check.

Thanks

Check and see if it stops assisting in the same spot.

His suggestion points to a binding situation due to bent parts... And it's certainly worth checking out.. But your comment about the hissing sounds like fluid bypassing...

If you turn all the way to the right then try to turn back to the left does it quit right there or can you turn the wheel some before it stops assisting? Also try and raise the engine rpm up to about 2k and see if it changes. If so the pump could be the culprit. Havent seen to many metering valves in those gear boxes go bad unless they have been crashed.

It won't turn left at any index in the steering. I put it in neutral and raised the rpm to 2-3K and no change.

If everthing else has checked out ok, the next thing to look at as some of the other posters said was the metering valve in the gear box.

What is this cast piece pictured below? There are two high pressure and one lower pressure lines attached to this piece that go to the power steering pump and gear box.

Could this be part of my problem?

Yes, don't waste your time trying to fix the box.
